Not necessarily that bad, but far less iconic than what it's made out to be:

[img:$uid]http://www.shopsydneys.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/ziggy_starduct.jpg[/img:$uid]

I might be just pissing in the wind with this one, but I don't think it's good at all:

[img:$uid]http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ca9TFi9Ha0I/SkRBTRMCrgI/AAAAAAAAAig/XJgV0_rCthM/s400/Thriller.jpg[/img:$uid]

In Al Jourgensen's defense, he never had that much style anyway:

[img:$uid]http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/e2e4c6e7fbb8f78b6e5cb2e330bbf801/6176.jpg[/img:$uid]

I like pantyhose and striped blouses on women as much as the next guy, but c'mon:

[img:$uid]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/311JJ4B4W3L._SL500_AA300_.jpg[/img:$uid]

So, it's not about "roots" as a metaphor at all then:

[img:$uid]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/417WQFGNDYL._SL500_AA300_.jpg[/img:$uid]

Oh dear...

[img:$uid]http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_e7to6BWyP28/S3vJXmfvUHI/AAAAAAAAABU/K30eABi-gXc/s320/marvin_gaye-here_my_dear.jpg[/img:$uid]

Visiting the dentist can be painful:

[img:$uid]http://www.log24.com/log/pix05B/051230-Indigo.jpg[/img:$uid]

lolwut:

[img:$uid]http://www.soundstagedirect.com/media/rick_james_street_songs.jpg[/img:$uid]

..., but Emancipation has always taken the cake for me. I couldn't believe what the cover art was like when I first had that thing in my hands. It looked like the cover art for those budget computer games you could buy for like 2.99$ at the time.

It's a great album alright, but the cover of SITKOL looks like an image from a colonoscopy. No wonder people thought that Stevie was starting to disappear up his own.... booty!

This is a copy of Teddy's 1981 album. razz

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I love the album, but I think the poem on the cover is just embarrassing compared to her lyrics.

I've always really loved that poem on the cover, too. boxed

This is an interesting thread. I sometimes have difficulty separating the cover art from the music. A mediocre, or just plain awful cover can seem brilliant because of the brilliant music it contains. Ziggy Stardust and Purple Rain are two examples - cover art is nothing special, but both are iconic because of the association with the songs on the albums. Street Songs too.

This is a concept worth talkin 'bout.

It's LOST on the modern music consumer.......how the art was an integral PART of the "experience" of the music. Digital has destroyed a lot of that stuff.

As "art" in & of themselves, many album covers are horrid. But if you hold it in your hands & LOOK at it while listening to the music.........brilliance. (?)

Some whole genres' appreciation DEPENDS on it. I don't think one can even comprehend P-Funk (for example.....or maybe Pink Floyd, for another) WITHOUT the intended cover art.

I concur.........but.....in context..and ESPECIALLY factoring in the resulting tour, it made perfect sense.

Stark....almost Orwelian .....yet brilliant. Like Stevie's "Songs"...not sure what would have done justice to the finest work of Janet Jackson / FlyteTyme.

Maybe....sometimes..it's best to just artistically say..."here it IS motherfuckers". The music exceeds the cover-art by light years.

The Beatles had a LOT of fucking-ugly cover art. They probably own the crown of always having the shittiest artwork, along with being the most overrated band in the history of the world.

and you didn't even mention their 2 best, Help and Rubber Soul. Compared with most 60s albums their covers are brilliant.
