I think it was either "Don't Wanna Change The World" or "You Know How To Love Me", I'm not sure.

Thanks! It was "You Know How To Love Me." Now listen to that song (You Know How To Love Me) and those two and tell me there is not a qualitative difference in the music arrangement and the complimentary vocal melody.

I figure it was that one. She's actually more famous for that one than "Don't Wanna Change the World" and oddly YKHTLM was only No. 12 R&B. But it WAS No. 6 dance though lol

"Don't Wanna Change the World" was her only No. 1 so it could be that one but "You Know How to Love Me" hit more charts. I guess either one is correct but I hear more YKHTLM than DWCTW nowadays.

YKHTLM is a more catchy song.

Wasn't most of her material primarily ballads?

Of course there is. One is a mid-tempo, the other two are ballads confuse The former emphasized on the rhythm, the latter two emphasized on the lyrics and the mood of what was conveyed in the lyrics(which was usually Madame Hyman's forte in general).

I LOVE her voice, but the material she puts out so rarely gives it justice.

Have to agree with that. She was a genius with that. She did something Whitney and 'em didn't do. Maybe that's why I probably would listen to all of her material than I would of Whitney or Patti. She doesn't oversing, soul music is not always about shouting, it's about expression and Phyllis surely had that in bundles!

Okay, when I spoke of difference what I should have stated is that a lot of her ballad arrangements is not as melodic as YKHTLM. That to me was the missing element. Isn't she the one in a duet with Michael Henderson on the song, "We Both Need Each Other." That song is a ballad and its a catchy song. The two that are listed here are not.

Jennifer Hudson disbelief

Her songs are either cheesy as fuck or trying so hard to be cool that it's laughable.

I'm guilty of having her debut album lol

I must say that the only song that I really like and can play over and over is Giving Myself. The rest of the album is just confused

Never heard that one! I'll give it a listen.

I like some tracks of her (One of these days, All the man, learned from the best, Susan for example), but i could never finish a whole album by her.

With a voice like that, i wished she had done something different, maybe even jazz or something.

In this clip, she really gives me chills, but it's not with her own material:

Have to agree Whitney first came to mind! to many love songs in her output man she could have done so much more with her talents!!

Jazz would have been a great fit for her! even blues i mean obviously the pop/rock/R&B thing did her good but the constant love songs where annoying as hell.

Celine Dion is another amazing voice to many cheesy love songs Mariah as well.

I think i would put Boys II Men, Steve Perry, Taylor Dayne.

I love all of them but once again TO MANY love songs i don't hate love songs at all but when you have a strong voice. You could have a lot to say[or your writer lol] and doing love song after love song just get's silly.

And a special shout to my boy R. Kelly post 90's songs... lol do i even need to say why?

Luckily he got back on the track big time with Love Letter! i love it so much i almost forgive him for Double Up, Chocolate Factory, Untitled, TP2 & TP3 lol

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

All music is shit music and no music is real- gunsnhalen

Mariah Carey post 2000- she was trying to go Miss Hip Hop and with the talent she had her music became watered down.

Tamia- not all the time because her biggest hits were actually good songs but after Stranger In My House they tried to give her stupid synthetic R&B material.

Keyshia Cole- her voice is not bad but they try to hard to make her the next Mary J Blige by giving her overbearing music to gloss over her voice.

Toni Braxton- After her 2000 album The Heat she started doing bad songs and over sexualizing herself and she was not the same Toni Braxton we loved.

Shakira- even though not a favorite I do think Shakira can sing her English debut music ablum was pretty good but her best music was pre blonde Shakira. Donde Esta Las Ladrones was a fantastic album.

sad I have to agree. Her first two albums were flawless though. I'm scared to hear full albums after that. Goddess of Love definitely is something I'm fearful of listening especially with Phyllis' heart not really being in it.

Ya'll are crazy disbelief

Even Goddess of Love have some winning moments if you take out that Riding The Tiger atrocity. But overall, Phyllis Hyman's discography is top notch.

right! I love Phyllis albums... there maybe a few bombs on the album... but some gems as well. I am in the process of building my own collection of Phyllis material and so far everything I have I love.
