Unsung - Deniece Williams

Did anyone catch Deniece Williams' Unsung episode on Monday night? If you didn't, don't worry. TV-One has it posted on their site.

http://player.theplatform...6ElFlwaTI_

I liked the episode and I did learn a few things about her that I never knew.

For instance, I never knew that she and Johnny Mathis were really friends. I thought it may have been just a record company thing. Also didn't know that she married her producer, Brad (I don't know his last name. It started with a W).

A few things I didn't like (which is usual for an Unsung episode) was that a lot of facts were twisted. Saying that "Silly" was followed by the next single "It's Gonna Take A Miracle" made is sound like they were from the same album. They didn't bother to mention her "When Love Comes Calling" album at all.

It's just sad to me that TV-One has a good show and tells wrong info. So sad. What do you all think?

Yes, Deniece's Unsung special was great. I didn't know that she had a relationship with Johnny Mathis and so many other men. It's remarkable that she and record executives didn't always see eye-to-eye when it came to certain things, as it showed that Williams was a definite risk taker.

I agree that Unsung does get some facts twisted on many of the artists they focus on. Certain album covers didn't even go with the album titles either, which was a big disappointment. But overall, it was great.

"Black Butterfly" was credited as being on the "I'm So Proud" album rather than "Let's Hear It For The Boy". neutral

Right. I was shaking my head when I saw and heard that. Not a good look. Now we know TV One is gonna definitely drop the ball when they do the other specials.

TVOne has not been exactly keen on details or stranger to cringe worthy moments(Like the infamous "Sarah Vaughan is just a singer" comment from the Minnie Riperton, mentioning her in the same breath as Whitney fuckin' Houston) and not to mention the George Clinton fiasco, etc...

BUT.....

From a bigger picture perspective, they def serve the purpose of shedding lights of those artists who don't get much love from the media or the so-called music historians, so I'm willing to shrug off that error and the many ones to come.

True, but I'm still perplexed as to why artists and groups like George Clinton, The O'Jays and Teddy Pendergrass got episodes, while there are other artists and groups that deserve them way, way, way more. I'm still awaiting episodes on The Sylvers and The Five Stairsteps!

I don't know. Maybe due to lack of enough footages/infos? You have to understand that back then, radio was where most of them threw most of their weight, and a couple of Soul Train/Midnight Special footage on a good day.

But I def feel you, did Millie Jackson get a special btw? This should be the no brainer IMO.

Yep that was one of the most important factors for alot of artists. And no Millie hasn't gotten one yet! Tevin Campbell would be another great person as well, but they constantly overlook him.

He did ok on her "So Glad I know" album (which was about the same time).

I do agree that "Hot On The Trail" was horrible, though.
