Wow. Gone too too soon.

Can't say I was the biggest fan of the man, but "The Revoution Will Not Be Televised" is an American classic. May he R.I.P.

Here's an informative documentary on this brilliant soldier who was for the people...

This man survived and challenged the system almost single-handedly. His words struck a chord for all times. His story needs to be heard by everyone.

I'm gutted over this. I was so happy to see him come back around last year, had wanted to see him but forgot about it till the night and finally punked out & stayed home. What a mistake.

I'm not going to mourn over this too much - he had a tough life -, I'll rather take it as an excuse to blast his music the entire weekend.

Sad, sad news, indeed. He was one of the absolute greats, even though he never truly got the recognition as such. A true poet as well as a musician, and, for my money, the most incisive and eloquent when it came to offering social commentary in black music.

With someone like Gil, who had a pretty turbulent life at times, and whose final years weren't spent drinking-in the popular acclaim that other great singers and songwriters receive at award shows and such like, I hope he knew that he was loved - really loved - and appreciated by a whole bunch of us. I feel lucky to have seen him perform a few times back in the 90s, and that I can still spin his records today and listen to the knowledge and the soul he left us.

Sad. I woke up to the news of his death this morning.

I met him briefly in FL. I was volunteering for a community radio station in Tampa. We were have a get together meeting for a rally against the Iraq war.

It was a short encounter but a memorable one. I was in awe!

RIP Gil

Your music and your message shall live on.

May the spirits guide you GIL. Gil was a true funk legend, who broke down boundaries between musical genres and his words... he made you rethink your thinking. Not a huge showman, but still a huge personality & force on stage. Much missed & much under-rated. Thanks Gil, you'll always live on with me.

I LOVE this brotha's music! And I do mean BROTHA! He is one of the last truth tellers, a messenger. Gil Scott Heron was a black man who loved being black, loved black people and made no apologies for it - a dying breed. Thankfully his words, music and message will live on!

RIP

This is so sad. I hope the brother is at peace because he seemed so troubled for someone so talented.

His work puts most rappers to shame and most do not even know who he is. We are losing our poets, singers, and true talents with no real replacements. sad

I think disillusionment was partly to blame for his troubles. He was so acutely aware of the ills of the world - the chasm between what should be and what is. That has sent many a soul over the edge.

Yeah he definitely was disillusioned over the years. The record labels he signed with surely didn't think he was of value. We always neglect true talent though... confused Don't know why. It just happens. And I can't quite understand why...

Anyway, take your rest, Gil. Hope you get the peace you never got in this crazy world we live in and thank you.
