Janet Jackson- Control

Thoughts on this album. It was an amazing album in my opinion.

"Rhythm Nation" will always be her best album to me and it's still one of the best pop/r&b albums i've heard, but "Control" is great as well.

"Control" was Janet's breakthrough album and it's when she was starting to fully come into her own as an artist and person as well. That's reflected in the title track especially. Not one bad song on there. No, not even "He doesn't even know i'm alive". Her vocals were pretty strong on that song actually which is why it's one of my faves.

I love every single song though, but "The Pleasure Principle", "Control" and "Funny How Time Flies" are everything for me. I probably listen to "Funny How Time Flies" more than any song on the album. Great quiet storm track.

"And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ heart

"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always heart

I was so into this album when it came out. I bought all of the maxi's (the cool summer mix of nasty was really something else). Though my Janet obsession got at his high with RN1814, Control already got me hooked.

LOVE this album, but I also think Rhythm Nation is her best album ever, and I also love and enjoy her in the 90's so much. I love all her music.

Nasty and Pleasure Principle are in my top 5 Janet music videos, so iconic and full of great dancing!

artistically, i stopped liking ms. jackson after 'rhythm nation'; i'm just not into all the sex stuff. i prefer her socio-political messages. i think control (along with 'rhythm nation') is her best engineered album. i can't say i like the last two songs on the album ('let's wait awhile' or 'funny how time flies') but the rest of the album is pretty spotless. i like the existential lyricism and precision-sharp beats. even though the work with her brothers is actually underated, i love the minneapolis turn she took with jam and lewis. it definitely set her apart.

i'm not sure what you mean... in mentioning the songs, or posting footage? i didn't check to see if there was footage of her performing all the songs on the album... i wanted to post some footage of the control tour, but i didn't see any... the rhythm nation tour kept popping up.

There was no Control tour to be had. All she had was the videos to the singles that she put out (and occasional performances at the American Music Awards and Grammys - both of which were legendary in my honest opinion). But then again, sometimes you don't always gotta post EVERYTHING associated with that era for a discussion. Some threads can't handle all that embedding. lol

oh okay... that would make sense than. and no, i wasn't planning to post everything, just a couple of things, which i did. i'm still not sure what the question was about, in terms of me not posting everything though. i do know that if some threads have a lot of videos on them it slows down my computer. and on the threads that have more pages, if i am responding to something it won't really load and i have to load up another page. strange, i know.

I was just reading the unauthorized Janet bio online and it mentioned that the biggest musical highlights were the songs that weren't released as singles and I tend to agree. I think "You Can Be Mine" and "Funny How Time Flies" would've been quite successful if not as successful as the six that were put out.

oh, i wasn't mentioning all the songs... i was just speaking of the album collectively, as opposed to naming all the individual songs. i DID, however, mention the two songs i didn't like on the album. i enjoy the whole album except the last two tracks.

in terms of arrangement, my favourite songs by far are 'pleasure principle', 'you can be mine' and 'he doesn't know i'm alive'.

Yeah "The Pleasure Principle" had the tightest arrangement, I thought.

janet jackson- one of the few artists to have a direct prince and michael connection!!! others would be sheila e, jam and lewis, STEVIE WONDER, james brown (they were on stage with him but never recorded, as far as i know), and a few others... does frank dileo count, since he's worked with both too?

I don't know if Frank really counts unless you meant in general lol in terms of music though, no Janet's one of the only ones. Good company.

yeah, for dileo, i mean in general. but musically, few people have had the pleasure of working or connecting with both. it would have been interesting to see la toya work with prince. i don't think joe would have had that happen though. but janet working with jam and lewis was one of the major industry coups, for sure. and michael was inspired by that. you see a lot of the minneapolis arrangements existing during the bad tour. they even take from 'what have you done for me lately' during one of the interludes in the show.

I read that bio, there was no way that was gonna happen b/w Prince and La Toya. lol

aw cute stories about control, I was 2-4 years old during the Control era and didn't know who janet was yet, though I knew michael smile In the mid 90's though, I found the record in my aunt's record collection though I didn't buy it on CD till a few years later.

I love the guitar hook in You Can Be Mine, I used to say it's a very Michael song and imagine the motown 25 steps to it, but I hear the Prince sound to it too now. I hear the Prince sound and a hint of PYT in He Doesn't Even Know I'm Alive, that song reminds me of I Wanna Be Your Lover and New Edition Mr. Telephone Man which I'm sure Jam & Lewis produced. I love her voice in it, especially the high notes, that it overshadows the lyrics, which are also relatable. I think for years I related to RN and VR more, but now I relate to Control lyrically.

I love the mixes to Pleasure Principle, especially on my Control remixes CD, I have 2 versions of that and there is an extended mix on it I used to play all the time. It also includes the two versions of the Nasty Cool Summer mix. I've heard some say this is the early new jack swing sound
