Joni Mitchell - 'The Beat of Black Wings' (1988)

...

They pick wars, we die in 'em,

to the beat of black wings...

My favorite from Joni....

This was the first Joni album I ever bought, and I still play it regularly. She's done better work, but still...something about this album really grabs me all the way through. I love My Secret Place, The Tea Leaf Prophecy, and Lakota. This song is really wonderful too.

Identity

"The Beat of Black Wings" is the saving grace of an otherwise tepid album. I used to own it on cassette.

Janet covered this song and it was supposed to be on the tribute album around Velvet Rope time. I forgot all about it till I saw this thread. Good song smile

I seem to remember Janet in a Vevelt Rope -era interview saying that Randy turned her on to Joni's music , and that Beat of Black Wings was her favorite track...but wow, I didn't know she actually recorded a version...interesting.....

biggrin I really liked those songs too--BTW, I thought it was cool that Wendy and Lisa added their vocals to The Tea Leaf Prophecy-- and Thomas Dolby did a lot of additional keyboard work on the album...

Yeah, I didn't know they were on it when I bought it. I only bought it because Prince had mentioned her as an influence so I thought I'd give her a listen. That album is full of interesting guest stars--Peter Gabriel, Tom Petty, Billy Idol, Willie Nelson, Don Henley. It's kind of her most "pop" album, but I love it.

Pali and the rest of you Joni fans, what do you think of Herbie's tribute album?

Woah...can really feel the love here...why put one down in order to boost the other up?

In fact why compare at all?

I don't think Janet did a version of the song...

I'm with Efan, the whole album is pretty good...(apart from the Wendy & Lisa collaboration).
