Mariah Carey's Virgin Deal

I was thinking about the deal she signed with Virgin but I am not sure if I understand what happened.

Did she signed a deal with Virgin for $80 million right, and then after Glitter they took back the $80 million and gave her $28 million to go away. So for one album she got $28 million. Is this what happened?

Basically. And how many poor saps were making fun of her for getting paid $28 million dollars to make one record?

I believe Virgin bought out her deal not necessarily because Glitter flopped but because they thought she went all Chalrlie Sheen on them. nuts wacky faint nutso It turned out she had a nervous breakdown because she overworked herself.

But if anything was learned from this deal, it was that the record companies were making ridiculous deals to superstar artists just as the whole business model was about to implode. They saw the huge sales for Backstreet Boys, 'Nsync, Britney Spears, Eminem, etc. and Mariah's past history and thought it would continue forever. They completely ignored the effect of digital downloading, and only Steve Jobs of Apple Computer was visionary enough to see how to make money off of it. In hindsight, Virgin probably saved a ton of money by cutting Mariah loose at that time.

I can't stand that heffa. Take a wannabe Whitney Houston, a wannabe Taylor Dayne, a wannabe Mary J. Blige, a wannabe Britney Spears, a hunk of dog crap...mix them all together in a blender, and you get Mariah Carey. That woman is like the sonic equivalent to asbestos. 1989 was the last good year in music, because it was the last that didn't feature her name anywhere.

Getting back to question, though, I believe she was dropped like a safe from a window because not only did her album crash and burn, but so did her mental state. She was a total parody and proved to be not worth their investment. My guess is that Virgin lost their shirt BECAUSE of her.

It backs up what she was saying herself when she moved to Island/Def Jam, that the support of the label was as important as what she was putting out. Charmbracelet didn't sell astronomically either, but at least Island had the patience to stick with her through The Emancipation of Mimi. Her 2 CDs since then (not counting the recent Xmas album) haven't sold as well as Mimi, but I'm looking forward to what her next project will be.
