Isn't a musician someone who plays/performs or writes music?

I thought someone who played an instrument was called an instrumentalist

So now a writer is musician as well?

Can I buy a voice at the store and play it?

That's irrelevant. What does buying something have to do with anything? What if someone gives you an instrument - you didn't buy it in that scenario.

As for the term "playing" - that simply means having the skill to create a melody with that instrument. Which is what singing is. If you don't have the skill to create melody with your voice, you can't sing. Just like if you don't have the skill to create melody by hitting combinations of keys on a piano, you can't play.
