What is a good entry point for this cat? There's a 3 disc box set from the mid '90s but I think it's out of print and sells for jacked up prices.

Not sure what you mean exactly. Jobim isn't that difficult for one to immerse in because most of his music is so melodious. I got the Stone Collector and that's a pretty good lp. Also their is wave, and the Orfeu Soundtrack he composed. If you liked the music from the movie that's also a good place to start. You might like his work with some jazz musicians, I think he did stuff with the big bebop cats in the early 60's/late 50's. Did Prince ever deny he had sex with his sister? I believe not. So there U have it..

I'm just looking for a good first purchase, or first few purchases. What are his best albums and/or compilations? Or are his songs done better by other artists?

I feel the same way, and almost composed the same response when I read the request for where to start. Not to say all his music sounds the same, but it all has the same vibe. I'd say start with whatever you find available first. I have 3 of his albums, and really couldn't recommend one over the other. I can put all of them on a playlist, set it to "random play", and I'm good to go.
It's not like when someone asks where to start with an artist like Frank Zappa, who is going to give you something different from album to album. Or like Prince, for that matter.
