HAPPY BIRTHDAY ARETHA FRANKLIN

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ARETHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As she is in NYC to celebrate her 69th birthday with a trip to Broadway to see DRIVING MISS DAISY with James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave, a dinner for a small group of friends and then a big party with performances and cake at a swank Big Apple hotel.

The Queen of Soul begins her comeback after and amazing weight loss on May 19th in Chicago with her first concert since Atlantic City in early October 2010.

She will perform May 28th in Niagara Falls, NY.

Just saw a couple pictures of her attending the New York Knicks' home base at The Garden where the Knicks and Magic faced each other. Look like she's still gradually losing weight and looking good. Happy birthday Ree Ree!

Friday night: Miss Aretha Franklin, Queen of Soul, dined with pals at the four star La Grenouille, took in a performance of “Driving Miss Daisy” with James Earl Jones, then took over the Park Room at the Helmsley Park Lane Hotel on Central Park South for an elegant, soul filled 69th birthday. Her guests included not only me (I was lucky enough to be invited) but also Clive Davis, Smokey Robinson, Bette Midler, Tony Bennett (who brought a portrait he painted of Ms. F), Roberta Flack, Al Roker and Deborah Roberts, Star Jones, plus Cissy Houston, Gayle King, Wendy Williams, Vaneese Thomas, Fonzie Thornton, Gwendolyn Quinn, Terry Stewart (of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum), and a couple dozen friends she’d brought from Detroit. Our pal, ABKCO Records’ Tracey Jordan, did a fine job lining up the night which featured performances by Tito Puente Jr. and band, jazz singer Nnenna Freelon, and Motown great Dennis Edwards, who coaxed Aretha up to the foot of the stage to sing a little of “The Way We Were.” Franklin looks sensational, in a flowing white caftan, her hair cropped chic-short. She has lost a good amount of weight, looks rested and ready to hit the road again. In fact, I’ve heard she’s coming back to New York on May 3rd to celebrate the release of her new album, “A Woman Falling Out of Love,” which Wal Mart will carry exclusively. When a cake was brought out, Aretha strutted over to cut it, and then shimmied as the deejay played “Respect” over the sound system. What a way to start your 70th year. All hail Aretha Franklin!

Yeah she was trying to be edgy in 1983. lol I think she was, not too many black women wore blond hair (Florence Ballard, Mary Wells, Mary Wilson, Etta James, etc.) Nowadays many black women tried to go blond. lol

Inside Aretha Franklin's Big Birthday Bash

March 26, 2011

When it's Aretha Franklin's birthday, you don't just sing any old tune.

At the Queen of Soul's swanky, star-studded 69th birthday party in New York City late Friday night – where Bette Midler, Smokey Robinson and Tony Bennett topped the guest list – revelers joined Dennis Edwards of The Temptations in wishing her well with a personalized version of "My Girl."

It went a little something like this: "I guess … you'll say … what can make me feel this way …. Aretha, Aretha, Aretha ..." And then the woman of the hour took the mic.

As guests screamed and applauded, the slimmed-down Franklin sang with Edwards for the delighted crowd, and then showed off some dance moves while blowing out the candles on her two-tier, flower-covered birthday cake. The song for that part of the evening? "Respect," of course.

After months of concern for the music legend due to a still-undisclosed ailment and surgery, Franklin (wearing Naeem Khan) looked healthy and happy at the bash, which featured several performances.

As one partygoer put it, "Detroit took over New York City this evening!"

And so did the famous faces. Also in attendance: Clive Davis, Rev. Al Sharpton, Gayle King, Star Jones, Michael Imperioli and Wendy Williams.
