REGGAE STAR BUJU BANTON FOUND GUILTY...

Well he probably is going to go to prison but the question is for how long. If Buju did not profit from any sale of cocaine then how much time could he get? Wow....what a dumb ass. Fuck that snitch tho...can't believe the snitch got $50K for talking drugs with Banton. We're in the wrong business. lol

Jamaican reggae star Buju Banton, who won a Grammy Award a week ago, was convicted Tuesday of brokering a cocaine deal with an undercover drug informant.

A Tampa, Fla., federal jury found Banton guilty of conspiracy to distribute cocaine after deliberating 11 hours over two days.

Banton, born Mark Myrie, reached the zenith of his singing career Feb. 13 when his album "Before the Dawn" was awarded the Grammy for best reggae album. But in a flash, his life has seemingly bottomed out as he faces a sentence of up to life in prison.

Prosecutors said Banton was the middleman in a cocaine transaction between Tampa dope dealers and a confidential informant working with the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The charges stemmed from a December 2009 DEA drug sting.

Banton, 37, was caught on covert audio and videotape boasting about the "no-risk" drug deal and sampling the illicite white powder.

"This is not about Buju Banton, the reggae singer. This is about Mark Myrie, the drug defendant," Assistant U.S. Attorney James Preston said during his closing argument last Thursday.

Banton's lawyer, David Markus, countered that the singer did not profit from the drug deal.

He said Banton was snared in the DEA probe because he is "a big talker" and was trying to impress the confidential informant - who ended up with a $50,000 commission following the bust.

"He tried to act cool," Markus said.

It is sad that he let things get to this point in his life, although I've heard he had a very difficult time earning money legitimately. shrug

Well, now I have an idea of how long he will be incarcerated. Strange how the first jury couldn't reach a verdict and the same evidence was presented to them as was presented to the jury in this case. This seems a miscarriage of justice IMO. If the co-defendents indeed brokered the deal and came up with money to be exchanged then it seems Banton should not be held responsible for anything other than possession and use of an illegal substance, not intent to sell. shrug

Grammy-winning reggae star Buju Banton has been convicted by a Florida court of conspiring to to set up a cocaine deal in 2009.

Prosecutors said the singer, whose real name is Mark Myrie, told an police informant he could broker the drug.

But Banton testified in court he was merely boasting, and prosecutors conceded he had never put money into a deal, nor made any.

His Before the Dawn won Best Reggae Album at the Grammy awards last week.

On Tuesday, Banton was convicted of conspiracy to possess cocaine with the intent to distribute it, another drug trafficking offence and a gun charge. He was acquitted of a fourth charge for attempted cocaine possession.

He now faces up to 15 years in prison, according to his lawyer, and he is being held for sentencing at a future date.

It was Banton's second trial over the charges; his first ended in September when a jury was unable to reach a verdict.

Much of the case hinged on video and audio recordings taken by the informant and by Drug Enforcement Agency personnel. The informant was paid $50,000 after Banton's arrest in December 2009 with two others.

One video shown to the jury showed Banton apparently tasting cocaine in a Florida warehouse.

A co-defendant later gave the informant $135,000 (£83,705). He and another man have pleaded guilty to drug charges in the case.

I was in Jamaica december 2009 when this story broke, it was big news out there. Everyones was like shaking there head in disgust, and so was I.
Buju is a bit star i dont understand why he got himself involved in a drug deal, he can make more money that most Jamacian artists out there. Hes done loads of gigs over here in the UK and theres plenty of places in Jamaican he can perform to especially in the tourist area where theres loads.
Hes so dumb doing any drug dealings in america they will slam someone like him jail fast and hard, theres so many snitches and snakes everywhere especially when ur a person in his postion coz they know they can make money outta of him. It wouldnt surprise me if he was set up anyway. if he did the drug deal in the UK or Jamaica im sure he would of got a lot lesser sentence. On top of that after he finishes his sentence he'll be banned from America for life and the UK too.

Yeah, the sad part is that he's going to jail for being foolish and perpetuating this big time drug dealer image when he's far from it. Big time dealers don't go out like this.
