Fantasia Lands Lead in Mahalia Jackson Biopic

American Idol alum and erstwhile VH1 reality-show star Fantasia Barrino has added another line to her resume today.

The season three winner is slated to appear in a feature-film adaptation of the 1993 book Got to Tell It: Mahalia Jackson, Queen of Gospel, which recounts the life of the late American gospel singer, a civil rights activist who was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The CAA-repped Barrino, who's biggest post-Idol gig to date was playing Celie in the Broadway version of The Color Purple, will portray Jackson on her journey from abject poverty in New Orleans to her rise as a global figure in gospel and early supporter of Martin Luther King, Jr. The singer died in 1972 at the age of 60.

The 26-year-old performer also played herself in the 2006 Lifetime biopic Life Is Not a Fairy Tale: The Fantasia Barrino Story, which was based on her 2005 autobiography.

The film will be directed by Euzhan Palcy (A Dry White Season) from a script by Jim Evering, and goes into production in April in Pittsburgh and Chicago for a December release.

I wouldnt allow fantasia to listen to Mahalia let alone play her in a movie. Apparently they are going for the ghetto ass angle???

I'm sure Mahalia's rolling in her grave too. Aretha was supposed to play her in a Broadway play back in 1984 but her plane scare from that same year stopped the production.

As they call her in some urban circles, 'Fanny' - can one say - WOW!

Aren't there some gospel singers that could pull this off? Fantasia Barrino is not right for this role. 'Hallie' was the most revered gospel singer and Miss Barrino I do not believe can capture her. Now her management is in negotiations with the Aretha Franklin biopic as well. Franklin has always stated there would be two actresses to play her, younger and older. I am still not sure how Jennifer and Fanatasis capture the different decades - but oh well.

On another thought, I wonder if the Jackson biopic will divulge her same sex loving/lusting/linking element - just asking....

That's what trains, chauffeured cars & buses are for. biggrin

Fantasia doesn't look anything like Mahalis Jackson, nothing. An open casting call is needed if they are really serious about doing a biopic but they aren't. neutral

wow eek That's like Christopher Nolan signing on anne hathaway to play Selina Kyle (catwoman). Can't see Fantasia playing Ms. Jackson. Looks like a lazy casting job to me.

Well Fantasia may look something like Mahalis Jackson but she looks nothing like the late Mahalia Jackson. lol

I'll assume producers picked Fantasia because she's well kown . . hoping her "name" will put butts in the seats of movie theaters. Maybe they think all Black people look alike so no one will notice these two woman bear no likeness to each other.

Whatever their line of thought is, it appears cycnical. lol

I don't think you have to look like the person you're playing to do a good job with the role. Angela Bassett looks nothing like Tina Turner and she nailed that role. The fact is, judging from her Lifetime movie, Fantasia can't act. Also, I don't think I can sit through a movie listening to that speaking voice of hers.

um....Tasia doesn't even sound like Mahalia. Mahalia has a deep soulfoul voice. Tasia just sounds like any ole church choir gurl; with a slight lisp.

I don't know how well Fantasia acts, but I would have loved to see Donna Summer do Mahalia considering Mahalia was one of her inspirations growing up. As a fan, I don't think Donna acts all that well, though she did a good job on the comedy, Family Matters as Aunt Oona from Altoona. LOL. Besides, Fantasia sounds nothing near to Mahalia. I don't recall many (if any) Mahalia songs doing a bunch of "yeah, yeah, yeah's" (smile). Donna's voice is much more near Mahalia's, I'd say. I've always considered Donna a pop version of Mahalia on some level, but that's me:)

That girl doesn't even sing. She just screams and yells. Average church singers would blow her out of the water.

Even though Mahalia loved the ladies, I wonder what she would think of an adulterer playing her? That's all I would think of watching the film. Tasia and Twaun.

The irony in all of THIS is that a woman (Fastasia) who was already guilty as charge for commiting an act of adultery by having an affair with another woman's husband is going to play Mahalia Jackson, The Original Queen Of Gospel.
