All of those people drew their influences whether directly or indirectly from Black American artists who planted their mark ever so firmly on music.
So, its nothing but a rerun.

As of this point I don't give a fuck where it came from, it's all damn good. US, UK, who fucking cares anymore?

I don't care about countries anymore, it's all kinda baseless now. It's just music and we're gonna like each other if it's good, that's how it is.

Me neither. But the OP asked a question, and I replied I supposed I should've came up with a PC answer but it wouldn't be honest from my end.

If you love the UK so much, how come you're ashamed of mentioning The Spice Girls, Bananarama, Girls Aloud, & Dead Or Alive/Pete Burns ?!?

I also notice that Heaven 17, Yaz, & Erasure are not on your list neither Joe. What's up with that? [Edited 1/30/11 13:49pm]

My point exactly. But I'm still calling Joe out for nothing mentioning The Spice Girls.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
oops, the Smiths & Erasure, I forgot them , my fault
and this is not a US vs UK thread , it's a thread to acknowledge the greatness of british pop music , hell I'm no brit but damn, those islands have spawned some fine bands/acts since 1963 eh?
Tony: the Spice Gurls are (were?) cool

Perhaps he wishes to cling onto the merest thread of respectability, though not seemingly implied by the inclusion of Duffy, Coldplay, and Judas Priest, I'll just about give him that. Just.
Didn't include: Faces & Roderick Stewart, Ronnie Lane, King Crimson, John Martyn, The La's, Sleeper, Kevin Coyne, Joy Division, New Order, Pulp, PJ Harvey, Radiohead, Tricky, Massive Attack, The Fall, Nick Drake, Elton John, The Cure...........actually, I don't agree.

- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
of course I've forgotten some bands/acts; people, I didn't want to include them all, the list would be too LONG
I should have included Elton though , my bad [Edited 1/30/11 15:26pm]

*(Although I'd advise against mentioning to them that you're including Ireland in the UK, particularly if they've had a drink or two.) [Edited 1/30/11 15:36pm] "Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced." - James Baldwin

Def Leppard
lol | |

And black American music drew influence from Scottish and Welsh gospel. So its a re run of a re run.
Whats your point? Good music is good music. Influence is the biggest form of compliment.
It doesn't take away from the fact that the UK is a music powerhouse in creative terms. It was the pre cursor for Amercian black music, and, in the case of the list of artists starting this thread, it has produced all these world leading artitsts, despite only being the size of Florida.

The few people I have talked to in the UK still assume Def Leppard are American. The "Pyromania" album did nothing in the UK. "Photograph" did nothing either. Not too surprising as the UK generally never got onto the AOR bangwagon. And Leppard were not heavy metal, which was big in the UK and the british music press at thetime just labelled them as sellouts to America. [Edited 1/30/11 17:42pm]

We could go on and on LOL. Blues most likely has early links to country music so there you go.....

THE CURE | |

Agree. On the influence thing, we could probably find a trail back the the Egyptians.
The thread asked about the output of the UK. I think its pretty impressive, when you look at its size. On a square footage Vs success, it leaves the rest of the world standing. .
