Curious that Michael is still the only artist to suffer the cursed sticky. I don't like it. You can't pick a subject to talk about cause it gets side-railed by pictures getting re-posted and people going on about different things constantly.

Why moderators can't control the board is a mystery to me, but this isn't an ideal answer. In the wake of his death, i understood it. But this time later and still stickies. No thanks.sad

If this was to prevent non Michael fans from entering and trolling, it didn't work. If it didn't work in non-sticky Michael threads, the fuck they think is gonna work here? I had a feeling Teena wouldn't get a sticky.

I think that the best solution would be to contribute to better or rather more productive discussions rather than to simply complain about it.

Here's a question I have been mulling over as of late:

Do you think that MJ's success with Thriller, or success in general, affected the way black American characters and people, in general, in a predominantly white American media are portrayed and viewed? What were the short and long term effects? How did his eventual 'fall from grace' did or did not affect it?

(I'm not writing a paper, but I was just curious of everyone's thoughts and opinions.)

I was at the Prince concert yesterday and overheard these 2 guys behind me saying Prince wins over MJ no question, musically. I hope they simply mean Prince can play instruments better than MJ because well, that's the only thing he can do better than Michael in my opinion. I'm a huge Prince fan, but in all honesty, MJ is second to no one. I've seen the way people get mesmerized by MJ and his performances, and his music and I'm not sure how people can still turn around and disrespect him, when they can't look away. Prince is more "profound" in the sense where the songs he writes is "deeper" but I think its not that MJ can't write deep songs, that's just not his style. Michael songs are very catchy which gives the illusion that they are simple, he uses a lot of dummy lyrics. But the beat and syntax of his songs are very complex. He turns something complex into something simple, in order to create a song that will communicate to people all around the world. And, yes, commercial success is a by-product of that but by no means does that mean that MJ is not a musical genius. Why can't people accept the fact that JUST MAYBE, someone who has many number 1 hits, international appeal and has many a devoted fan base, means that he is actually the best? Maybe there are too many lady gagas and justin biebers in the world for people to keep an open mind, but remember MJ came before all of that, he created the idea of a pop sensation. The stigma of the talentless, commercial, processed pop star came AFTER Michael Jackson because of all his imitators. The only reason why one should look badly upon Michael Jackson is if you're mad at him for all the crappy pop music that came from imitators there after. I think its funny, those people who are too cynical and jaded to see the truth, they pride thereselves in their musical taste, underground obscure artists that are supposedly the best ever but no ones else seems to think so. And another thing that is really strange is that for some reason, everyone disregarded his music after the thriller album. If you really listened you would find that Bad and dangerous are actually his best works. And ever wonder why no one really covers MJ music? I mean who in their right mind would do a cover of 'In the closet' or 'give in to me' or 'pyt'? Why wouldn't anyone touch an MJ song? Because he owns it. When he sings a song, everyone for centuries will know that they can't touch it because it would be very embarassing to try. I honestly couldn't say that Prince is a better songwriter than MJ. It depends on what you look for in a song. MJ wrote singlehandedly: dont stop till you get enough, working day and night, wanna be starting something, billie jean, beat it, the way you make me feel, liberian girl (which tupac used the beat to for his song letter 2 my unborn) , dirty diana, smooth criminal, we are the world ( You know its really wasn't co-written by lionel richie at all when you watch all the interviews), heal the world, black or white, give in to me, who is it, blood on the dance floor, night time lover, muscles, and those are to name a few of my favorites. Michael sings and dances better than Prince. And Prince is better on instruments. Prince has written way more released material than MJ but on whether who is the better songwriter that really depends on who you are talking to. Whether it is melodys or instrumentation that you are big on. I think I'm personally bigger on melodys because as MJ said 'melodys were already written in the stars, you just have to pluck them down.'

Ok, so I saw this some months back:

Popular Music and Society that examines constructions of subjectivity in Michael Jackson's music, with a focus on gender, sexuality, age, disability, and race. Contributors are invited to address ways in which Jackson's vocality, grooves, rhythmic invention, songwriting, conformity with and/or irreconcilability of generic categories, particular songs, song categories (such as ballads) or albums, record production, use of technology, and live or mediated performance work to produce his own, often spectacularized, subjectivities, as well as those of his listeners. We are interested in drawing together articles that engage in an interdisciplinary manner the myriad ways in which subjectivity is constructed in Jackson's work: narratives of desire, healing, redemption, anger, violence, celebrity; engagement with world politics, charity; intergenerational relationships; the spectacular body in performance; illness as it impacted his music and performance; freakishness/the fantastic; challenges to hegemonic constructions of race, masculinity, sexuality, gender--to name only a few possibilities. Although we welcome contributions that employ a broad range of methodologies, including the development of new methodologies for the analysis of popular music, we intend that these essays address musical sound and sound related to text (lyrics), image(s), and dance directly. While the complexity, ambiguity, and irreconcilability of Jackson's subjectivity/ies have been covered exhaustively, mainly by the mass media, only a few scholarly essays have made significant inroads to understanding these phenomena; moreover, none of these has addressed musical sound in detail. We therefore see the need for rigorous scholarship into Jackson's creative output, with specific emphasis on musical sound, the place where he, himself, arguably commented most explicitly upon the matters referred to above. Our vision is that this issue will include essays that range over Jackson's long career, from his time with the Jackson 5 through his last studio album, Invincible, and final live performances, perhaps including the forthcoming film documenting preparation for his This Is It tour.

So I went to look for the issue and I haven't seen it yet. Has anyone heard about it? I saw someone had a title of a paper that focused on Black Nationalism in MJ's music, or maybe in They Don't Really Care About Us on academia.edu, but it wasn't posted yet (assuming that it has anything to do with the issue). I emailed the editors/professors, but I don't know if I'm gong to hear from them. This is issue would be like a dream come true. I mean like, finally right? People who would be, honestly, interested in treating his music as a serious academic subject. If I can get my hands on this, I would actually buy it and scan it page by page for everyone. I am that serious about getting my hands on this issue.

Also, this would be a great way to get over that debacle of a symposium that Friday in Chicago was. I have a paper from jpanafrican.com if anyone wants a link to the PDF. It talks about how MJ used popular music conventions to successfully reflect the social values of the times that the songs were released. Then it goes into depth about Wanna' Be Startin' Somethin' and Beat It and how each song were able to bring different groups of people together.

Also, if anyone wants to start rambling about how MJ made 'inferior' music I got a paper about musical subjectivity for them to read as well. =D

When you were complimenting Michaels songwriting you probably should have mentioned music from HIStory. I think thats where Mikes songwriting becomes deep (Except for D.S.)

you're right. I should have, I just didn't want to provide too long of a list. So to add--They don't care about us, stranger in moscow, earth song are also my favorites. Oh, and the invincible album. Speechless made me cry the first time I heard it. It overwhelming to listen to that song.

This is just in their opinions. It is okay. It doesn't mean anymore than that really. Some people like to think that the pop music that they listen to is far superior to the pop music someone else listens to, but that's not true in the least. There's no way to objectively judge which is why it's all subjective. Both artists were amazing talents. Whichever someone else prefers is just a matter of taste really.

Though I do agree that some of MJ's best songwriting was in HIStory.

LOL, but thats one of the "what if's" in popular music.

How would The Jacksons have sounded, do Randy and Michael still create a lot of the music, or would it be the leads Mike and Jermaine? How about Michael's solo career (and Jermaine's.)
