Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience

November 24,2010

The Warfield, SF

Let me start by saying I am a huge Led Zeppelin fan, so I was not exactly sure what to expect. I guess my biggest worry was the vocals and whether or not the singer could pull it off. James Dylan was the closest thing I have ever heard to Robert Plant's voice, he sounded amazing. Jason told some great stories about his father and they showed alot of cool footage. One of the highlights was when Jason played "Moby Dick" along with his late father on the screen behind him. He is a great drummer. It was almost a 3 hour show with an intermission half way through the set. The whole band sounded amazing, when I closed my eyes I thought I was at a Led Zeppelin concert. It was pretty cool to get to meet and shake hands with Jason's daughter. There are only a few dates left on the tour but I recommend seeing it if you get a chance.

November 23rd: JOANNA NEWSOM at Carnegie Hall

Harpist Joanna Newsom was nervous on the last night of her tour playing the famed Carnegie Hall for the first time, but said when she heard the acoustics during sound check, she knew the show that evening would go well. I totally agree after seeing her for the first time tonight and in such an excellent venue along with her band: a drummer, guitarist, two violinists and a trombone player (nice solo at the end of "Good Intentions Paving Company"). Even from my faraway seat in the balcony, watching Joanna's fingers flick the strings of her harp reproducing the intricate melodies from her ambitious albums Ys and the triple disc Have One On Me was a remarkable sight. Joanna also played three songs on piano ("Easy", "Inflammatory Writ" and "Good Intentions Paving Company") and while retuning her harp after the first two, allowed the audience to engage in a Q&A session with her and the band. I'd love to see Joanna live again, but as she said, she may only get to play Carnegie Hall once in her life so any future performance someplace else will be hard to top this one.

Setlist:

Bridges and Balloons
Have One On Me
Easy
Cosmia
In California
Inflammatory Writ
Go Long
Good Intentions Paving Company
Emily
Peach, Plum, Pear

Encore:
Colleen

105 minutes

Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa

December 1, 2010

The Warfield, San Francisco

The show was great, not only is Dweezil one heck of a guitarist but he surrounds himself with some amazing musicians. The beautiful Scheila Gonzalez was incredible on sax, flute, keyboards and vocals. The guy singing sounded alot like Frank. I do not think I have ever heard such an amazing xylophone player. They performed the classic Apostrophe album in its entirety and played many more songs for what was about a two and a half hour set. A few of my favorites were Dinah Moe Humm, Muffin Man, Titties 'N' Beer, Baby Snakes, I Promise Not To Come In Your Mouth, Keep It Greasy, Stink Foot, and of course all the tracks from Apostrophe. It was very cool when they showed video of Frank playing along with the live band, his guitar solos sounded fantastic. After the show I got to shake hands with Scheila and get my ticket signed by Dweezil, he is one cool cat. I definately recommend this show to all Frank Zappa fans and all music lovers in general.
