Aretha Franklin cancels concert dates, personal appearances through May, on doctors' orders

DETROIT — Aretha Franklin is cancelling all concert dates and personal appearances through May.

A spokeswoman for the legendary singer told The Associated Press on Thursday that Franklin's doctors "have required her to do so."

The news comes several days after publicist Tracey Jordan announced that the 68-year-old Franklin had been released from a Detroit hospital following a brief stay. Jordan wouldn't say whether the events are related and didn't offer any details about Franklin's condition.

One of the shows being cancelled is a Christmas concert scheduled for Detroit's Fox Theatre on Dec. 9. Theater operator Olympia Entertainment says the show is being called off "due to medical reasons."

Yeah Ree claimed she stopped doing that in '91. I think shortly after that is when her weight ballooned. I'm thinking she has diabetes and doesn't wanna reveal it. Even if you eat and think you can't gain weight, you might get diabetes and blow up beyond your control but you try to carry on as if nothing's a problem. I'm starting to sense that in Aretha. sad Then again there's another form of diabetes where you lose weight beyond your control but who knows? Hate speculating but cancelling all your important dates until MAY 2011 is alarming. Reminded me of when James Brown had to cancel some shows because of health problems and then before you knew it he's passed on. I wish the best for Aretha though.

I agree with this statement. She probably does have diabetes and that disease is horrible to deal with when you are her age - heck its a struggle at any age. I just hope it's not so severe that her life is immediately threatened; not ready to let Ree go...not like this. I hope for her to live a healthy lifestyle and stay with us another 30 years. Della Reese had dietary issues and drank and didn't exercise and it wasn't until she had a heart ailment (maybe stroke or heart attack?) that she changed her lifestyle.

Word up and she can always eat grilled chicken and baked chicken too. Fried chicken is NOT good 4 ANYONE, especially NOT a woman in her 60's with weight and Diabetes issues. She needs to "Get It Right" and stick TO it. Hopefully, she WILL. smile

Yeah I just hope it ain't so life threatening that it's too late. She's almost 70 and has gone through so much I just hope that this is just a minor blip and not a major issue. pray She gets my r-e-s-p-e-c-t no matter what.

Aretha quit smoking in around '92, and hasn't looked back. Her weight did start to increase after she stopped smoking, as does that of lots of folks.

Her life has been a songbook in history as detailed by many of her recordings, but her most guarded inner demons will probably go to her final resting place.

Get well Queen of Soul, and by all means, follow the orders of your doctors.

She wears outrageous outfits that don't flatter her figure, but she def. lost weight over the past 5 years. The performance she did with Condi Rice, she just looked like a woman in her late 60s that had some weight on her, but nothing extreme.

Concern rises about Aretha’s health

Adam Graham / Detroit News Pop Music Writer

Aretha Franklin’s decision to postpone all professional activity for the next six months has some worried about the state of the Queen of Soul’s health.

Among the casualties of Franklin’s announcement, which was spurred by doctor’s orders, was a planned Dec. 9 Christmas concert at Detroit’s Fox Theatre. The concert, which was to feature former Temptations lead singer Dennis Edwards, was announced just last week.

“I’m not upset about the cancellation; I’m more concerned about her health,” Edwards said Friday. He said he had tried to get in touch with Franklin but couldn’t because she had recently changed her phone numbers, which he said she does often.

“We go back 40-50 years, from the early Motown days and growing up in Detroit,” he said. “She’s a personal friend of mine, and her health is more important to me than the show.”

Up in the air is Franklin’s involvement in the Thanksgiving activities at Detroit’s New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, once pastored by her father, the late Rev. C.L. Franklin. The church is hosting a Thanksgiving dinner billed as “Aretha’s Thanksgiving Gospel Feast,” but the Rev. Robert Smith, the current pastor, said by e-mail Friday that he wasn’t sure whether Franklin would attend. There has been “no word from her,” Smith said.

The Fox Theatre concert is among a rash of recent concert cancellations from Franklin. The Fox show was announced the same day Franklin, 68, canceled a concert appearance in Charlottesville, Va., “for health reasons,” according to her representative. The next day, Franklin pulled out of an Oct. 30 concert at Drury University in Springfield, Mo., also citing health concerns.

The Charlottesville concert had originally been set for Oct. 1 but was postponed after Franklin’s son, Eddie, was beaten at a Detroit gas station. The fallout from that Sept. 21 attack pushed Franklin to release a statement blasting “gross inaccuracies” by both the media and the police regarding the incident.

Earlier in August, Franklin was forced to cancel her first-ever Brooklyn concerts, scheduled for Aug. 9 and 12, as well as an appearance at a birthday party for U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., after she fell and suffered two fractured ribs.

“I was very much looking forward to being in Brooklyn and having a foot-long hot dog at Coney Island,” Franklin said in a statement at the time, adding she was hoping to reschedule the concerts for later that month. She never did.

In April, Franklin backed out of an appearance at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, just 10 hours before she was due to perform. It was the second year in a row she pulled out of a scheduled performance at the festival.

Franklin did appear at a concert in Philadelphia in July, where she performed with former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The benefit concert raised more than half a million dollars for Philadelphia’s Mann Center, the summer home of the Philadelphia Orchestra. She also performed at a concert in Vienna, Va., that same month and in October at Caesars in Atlantic City.

On Tuesday, it was announced, through her representative, that Franklin had been released from Sinai Grace Hospital in Detroit “following a brief stay.” The statement said she was resting comfortably at home but was anxious to get back on the road.

Meanwhile, Edwards, who had just returned from a performance overseas when he was informed of the Fox show’s cancellation, said he was in the dark about her condition. “I am just deeply concerned at this point,” he said.

well there you have it, its all right here, tons of cancellations, we know she has had issues, her firends and people around her know the deal, so it all rings very familar of others situations where you have people around you that just wont tell you honestly, i mean you dont have to even know Aretha personally to know she is unhealthy, but they can only change and she hasnt she actually has gotten worse over the years, so i think finally someone stepped in, or a doctor basically said look you have to do this or call it a day with life
