Mary's Wells' "Operator" debuted as the b-side of 1962's "Two Lovers". Motown released Brenda's version in either 1964 or '65.

Correct on Mary. Brenda released her version in '65. Her version hit the charts. I think it peaked at 78 on the Hot 100.

I've always sensed that Brenda Holloway was billed as the next Mary Wells,,,,,it seemed like Motown wanted to invest in her in result of them losing Mary to another label.

Yeah and in essence they didn't really tapped into what Brenda was. It was all about image for them because Mary was an early symbol of Motown's success and because Brenda had a similar vocal build to Mary's (that is until she began belting it out), they only focused on that part. Once the Supremes started making mad bread, they ignored any more stuff from her.
