News: Island Def Jam & L.A. Reid End Relationship, "He Got The Boot From The Board Of Execs"

According to a source from the label, Reid's employment was terminated Monday (September 20) afternoon.

Record executive LA Reid during his tenure at Island Def Jam was responsible for heading over mega acts like Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Pink and Justin Bieber. Despite the fact that these artists are huge on popular consciousness, LA Reid still hasn't been able to pull off any super sales. So... according to information on the entertainment wire, LA Reid got LET GO: "Def Jam fired L.A. Reid," the source tells us. "He got the boot from the Board of Execs yesterday." (Dime Wars)

Additional reporting suggests Reid may just be one of a few high-profile executives to lose their jobs.

Of course, the Def Jam folks are planning to keep the announcement very P.C. They will likely put out a statement saying things were cordial and/or mutual. But that's def not the case, according to our source. Def Jam indeed did not renew his contract. We're not privy to the details on the reasons behind the split. But we do know lots of politricks were involved. We also hear Sylvia Rhone, Executive VP at Def Jam's parent company Universal, is next on the chopping block if Kelly Rowland's next album doesn't do well. So new blood will be riding in to Def Jam/Universal soon. Who will it be.... (The YBF)

Yeah, I'll save my eulogy for Mr. Reid until I see it from a more credible source. No offense Banks. Thanks for posting btw. Maybe he's reaping what he's sown considering how he treated or mistreated legends like, Patti, Janet, etc. Let's not even go back into the LaFace days.

Not defending Reid at all but, did 'The Board Of Execs' ever consider that people are tired of buying the same manufactured pop drivel created only to fill their bank accounts?

There is no longer any real artist development. They just want hit$, not good music!

L.A. Reid is responsible for authorizing time, money, and energy being taken away from the projects of individuals of reputation like Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson and involved artists like Ne-Yo to spend on a no-count joke like Rihanna.

Since she's only good for $1.29 singles, and she didn't sell those so well last time around, and radio play, which they probably took a loss on in payola since "Russian Roulette" and "Hard" still weren't airplay wonders, I'm sure the board is mad. Island Def Jam has no one else to reliably fall back on - it's incredibly pathetic but that's the way the label is organized, and it's mostly his fault as C.E.O.

And then he goes and signs Jennifer Lopez recently, whose place in music (talentless 'It-Girl') their golden girl Rihanna directly stepped into? Yeah, she's going to do so well rolleyes ...is he against quality or something?

If this is true, it is great news for the label and, honestly, for the industry. Reid has always been a shady, misguided executive and I truly hope this is the last time he'll be working in the industry. Maybe some new blood will adjust the balance over at Island Def Jam and fix the fact that they are currently a complete mess as a label.

A representative from Island Def Jam parent company, Universal, has come forward to address speculation that chairman Antonio "L.A." Reid has been terminated.

According to the rep, Reid has not been let go from Island Def Jam.

Rumors have been spreading all day on the Internet that Island Def Jam CEO, Antonio "L.A." Reid, has been fired from his position at the historic label. XXLMag.com spoke to a rep for parent company Universal Music Group, who says the gossip is false. "[The rumors] are completely untrue and without merit," the spokesman told XXL this afternoon over the phone. (XXL Mag)

...and the good times stopped with "E=MC2," which started off well and, honestly, ended on a puff. It hasn't recovered since and that's really just the facts, which (I don't care who you are) is unacceptable.

That's the only thing you picked up on? Ignore her name completely if you want because she is NOT the basis for my argument. If anything, Janet received the rawest treatment.

I wouldn't believe that statement if it came to me notorized.

People don't just sit around and make up rumors about top executives getting fired. This PR card has been played far too many times.

The "good times" stopped because of the music but she recieved plenty of promotion. Hell, they even lite up the Empire state building in her favorite colors for 2 days straight. There was tons of hype for her release. I'm just calling it like I see it. *Kanye shrug*

and what do you mean by rawest treatment?

She HAS put out another album since then. Maybe you didn't remember? Understandable wink . Those comment were moreso pointed at "Memoirs" than "E=MC2," to tell you the truth.

I do feel like the sorry choice (I hated the song from the beginning) combined with sorry promotion of "Bye Bye" halted any future potential that album had in its tracks. The label came with an overwhelming frontal approach and failed to sustain it afterward, even on a single-by-single basis. I always felt that was odd and quite forced considering Rihanna gets the payola period for nearly the entire length of her album's life - it was almost like they wanted the big splash and to be through with her. The train hasn't gotten back on the track for MC since then.

Again, I really meant the botched job all around on "Memoirs" but if I have to trace the beginning of the end back to a breaking-point, that's where I see it.

I'll define 'rawest treatment' for you momentarily... biggrin

I'm aware of that but you only mentioned E=MC. LOL at you saying Rihnna gets payola as if Mariah doesn't. Ch... Memoirs was a botch album period She did a remix with a popular rapper and R&B singer and it still flopped. Let's not act like IDJ didn't push Mariah at all. They did. She promoted IWTKWLI and it did nothing. Oh well.
