I like him ok but I kind of stopped following him after Sea Change. He kind of pissed me off with multiple releases of his newer albums.

There are a couple songs on new Jamie Lidell that I thought sounded like what I wished Beck was doing, and then someone told me Beck provided instrumentation on the new Jamie Lidell. ha!

Guero was great! That one, and Odelay

I still check out what he does. The albums from Guero to Modern Guilt were perhaps a bit too same-y, but sure he's made a lot of great music. I'm not that much into his early stuff, I prefer the "adult" Beck.

1. Sea Change

2. The Information

3. Mutations

Yes, but the 2nd disc of the deluxe edition of Odelay has some fantastic tracks on it, it's not just the usual 2nd disc of remixes, which is ironic, because my favorite track on it is the 12 min U.N.K.L.E remix of Where It's At.

My top 5 are:

1. Midnite Vultures.

2. The Information.

3. Mutations.

4. Mellow Gold.

5. Odelay.

He also re-recorded the entire Velvet Underground & Nico album and released it via his website, a very interesting version indeed, very Beck. Worth checking out.

I love Beck. Sea Change & Midnight Vultures are two of my favorite albums...

As for The Information, Guero, Odelay: I love 'em all, but they feel like collections of amazing songs rather than amazing albums with a unique identity. Like, you could toss the tunes in the air, let them fall where they may, and it wouldn't change the inherent feel of the albums.

Beck is the 90s generation Prince.

On the whole I find it a bit, uhm, "same-y" indeed. Though I was listening to it a few days ago and just had to once more wonder at how great a song "Earthquake Weather" really is. "Hell Yes" is another overlooked track.

I find the Guero remix album a more satisfying listen.

I agree, it's got some nice songs, but feels less essential than Midnight Vultures or Odelay or the best stuff on Mutations.

I was listening to Modern Guilt, and it wasn't doing much for me.

But I am a fan, I think he is consistently creative and fun to listen to. I am not as big a fan of Sea Change as some people, though. Musically, I think it's great, and one of my favorite albums of his, but emotionally I think it is a little contrived--like he's trying to make a serioius album because people thought he couldn't do it.

That's like an extension of the same album though, and yes it's a great listen as well!

Me fan. Check out the "Record Club" they're doing on www.beck.com, covering classic albums and filming it in the studio. Very cool.

Hey loudmouth, shut the fuck up, right?

She and Beck did a whole album together (Irm) and i think it is really rather good.

You can tell right away that Beck wrote the songs, they could have been on a Beck album very easily.

Charlottes voice suites these songs quite well, yes she is not a natural singer, but then Beck is not exactly known for singing like a songbird.

I don´t have any of his albums, but the songs I´ve heard I liked.

I was hating on Jamie not 2 months ago, in a Mayer Hawthorne thread. I came around. smile

God yeah.

High school i was craazy for him.

Odelay, mellow gold, midnite vultures, mutations... I know every second of those albums.

Sea Change I used to love, now not so much. Beyond there, I'm not in love with.

The Record Club thing's neater than I expected.

I mostly listen to his early early stuff these days. Mining the songs I haven't listened to as much.
