Songs You Loved In The Past That Suddenly Have A New Funny Meaning!

I'm starting to listen to old songs I loved in the past that suddenly have a new meaning to them again when you hear them years later. For instance, today one of my best friends knocked on my window pane because she left her cell phone here and my doorbell isn't working. So, I answered the front gate by singing lyrics from Aretha Franklin's "Until You Come Back To Me":

"I'm gonna rap on your door/ tap on your window pane

I'm gonna camp on your steps

Until I get through to you

I got to change your view, baby!

Until you come back to me..."

Well, after my friend laughed her ass off she told me that was a "stalker" song and I went damn! I never thought about it that way! LOL When I was a kid I thought it was about "true love," faithfulness, and persistence! Well, I still think it's about persistence but in a nuts kind of way! razz lol What kind of songs did you like when you were younger that now have lyrics that seem changed/funny/or a trifle wacko these days? wink

"Ain't No Woman Like The One I Got" by the Four Tops.

I've always dug that song, until one day I noticed the line,

"My word she will obey". hmm

"Love Hurts.
Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

-Cher, "Woman's World"

I think the whole "stalking" element was merely an exaggeration for dramatic effect,,,,,,tell your friend to stop being so literal lol

I think some of Prince' songs have sexist overtones in them. The woman is either a confused lil' thing in desparate need for somebody(in this case, a PENIS) to stir her into the right direction otherwise the poor unfortunate soul will continue being lost & confused lol or a fucked up Jezebel bitch, period.

I'm listening to these songs and I'm thinking "What the hell did his mama ever do to him? Thats what I really wanna know!"

Of course, there're times when women are portrayed as goddesses in his music(Which is not always a good thing either, because I don't see why must it be so extreme).

Emancipation is one of the few albums I find his portrait of women to be balanced.

Love that song, too! Yet another lyric I never paid attention to! Like hell I will bow down to "my word she will obey!" lol

"Always Be Your Baby," Mariah Carey. I never really loved the song, but it became increasingly creepy with each listen, sounding more and more like an anthem for obsessive stalkers everywhere.

We were as one
For a moment in time
And it seemed everlasting
That you would always be mine
Now you want to be free
So I'll let you fly
'Cause I know in my heart
Our love will never die

You'll always be a part of me
I'm part of you indefinitely
Boy don't you know you cant escape
Ooh darling 'cause youll always be my baby
And we'll linger on
Time can't erase a feeling this strong
No way you're ever gonna shake me
Oh darling 'cause you'll always be my baby

this song, and of course, every Village People song I loved as a kid.

Amazing how many of these types of lyrics exist for those teetering on the line and about to fall over! lol
