Essence Fest Review: for the fans of the Queen of Lip-Synching: Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson jumps back in at Essence Music Festival

NEW ORLEANS – For her first full show since 2008's Rock Witchu tour, Essence Music Festival headliner Janet Jackson shook off the rust and any lingering effects from mourning her older brother on the recent one-year anniversary of his passing and presented a solid, but occasionally shaky 90-minute set. Though Jackson is currently shooting the Tyler Perry film For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf in Atlanta, she carved out time for her first Essence appearance and made the most of it. Her hits-studded set list and staging borrowed heavily from her 2008 tour, though she added a few new elements such as recent singles Make Me and Nothing. As celebs such as Perry, Omarosa and members of the Housewives of Atlanta cast looked on, Jackson put on a display that emphasized over-the-top sexiness and dazzling video effects instead of her singing (which on occasion appeared to be abetted by lip-synching). That was a wise decision -- the energy sagged noticeably and the Superdome seemed to suck up her voice when the dancers and some of the musicians left the stage while she performed softer, quieter numbers such as Let's Wait Awhile and Again. But it came slithering back during an extended S&M-themed sequence built around Any Time, Any Place. After leading four crawling, leather-clad, spike-haired men onstage by leashes, Jackson, clad in a sheer leotard and fishnet stockings, plucked a man from the crowd and engaged in an explicit sex romp that probably left even Bourbon Street vets blushing. She regained her equilibrium toward the end by blasting out dance hits Nasty and Rhythm Nation and offering a brief visual tribute to Michael (vintage photos of the two were flashed on the video screens) during show-closer Together Again.

LOL! I Thought Britney was the Queen of lip-synching, but I'm guessing that since Janet is her senior the title should go to her. wink

Just like the white winged dove...

Saucy Janet Jackson performs S&M scene live onstage in eye-popping basque Last updated at 12:32 PM on 3rd July 2010 Comments (0) Add to My Stories She may be 44 years old - but Janet Jackson is showing no signs of toning down her outrageous dress sense or stage shows. Janet - famed for her six pack when she first shot to megastardom in the Eighties - wore a risqué silver corseted basque and knee-high boots as she performed at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans last night. However, there was no chance of the singer suffering a repeat of 2004's 'wardrobe malfunction' in which Justin Timberlake tore off part of her costume to reveal a pierced nipple as part of the Super Bowl opening ceremony. In control: Janet gets felt up by her dancers as part of her raunchy stage show Although the singer's outfit was skimpy, she appeared to be well strapped in as she performed rigorous dance routines for a hot, high-energy two-hour set featuring all her hits including Nasty and Control. Sporting her new, chic short-cropped hairstyle, Janet sent temperatures soaring even higher towards the end of the show when she acted out an S&M scene with a male volunteer from the audience. He had his hands and arms strapped into a straight jacket as Jackson pretended to punish him, whip in hand. Points made: Janet was in sizzling shape for her two-hour show To roars of approval and whistles from the crowd, the mystery man mouthed 'thank you' as he made his way back into the audience. It was the star's first live show in more than two years, though fans saw her recently on television for the finale of American Idol. Meanwhile, Jackson, whose weight has notoriously fluctuated over the years, is also preparing to launch a self-help book that she's written. Silver lady: Janet looks fierce with her space-age boots and studded crotch Called True You, it's about her experiences of 'dieting and emotional eating' and it hits the shops this autumn. She has said of the book: 'It's not an autobiography, but I tell anecdotes about my life from when I was a kid to now. Things happen that can affect a child for the rest of their life and I didn't want to just speak to adults about these issues, so the book reflects that.' The Nutty Professor star has also revived her acting career and hits the silver screen in the UK on September 10 in Why Did I Get Married Too? She also sings the theme song, Nothing. Hot stuff: Janet writhes on the floor with her dancers caption] Janet is also currently filming For Colored Girls, which she's starring in alongside Whoopi Goldberg. It's based on Ntozake Shange's 1975 Tony Award-nominated play. And last week, Janet accompanied her brothers to visit the grave of their late brother Michael at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California, on the one-year anniversary of his death. Other stars performing at the Essense festival at the city's Superdome this weekend meanwhile include Alicia Keys, Estelle, Mary J Blige and LL Cool J.
