Harlem Cultural Festival aka Black Woodstock "The Harlem Cultural Festival (also known as "Black Woodstock") was a series of music concerts held in Harlem during the summer of 1969 to celebrate African American music and culture and to promote the continued politics of black pride. Notable participants included Nina Simone, B.B. King, Sly & the Family Stone, Jesse Jackson, Abbey Lincoln & Max Roach, The 5th Dimension, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson, and Moms Mabley, among many others. The concerts took place in Harlem's Mount Morris Park on Sundays at 3PM from June 29 to August 24, 1969"
I know the whole "Sly & The Family Stone" show is filmed so surely the whole festival is filmed. It would be awsome to see the whole thing. Seems like Sly & the Family Stone was the only act who was in both "Woodstock" and what they called "Black Woodstock".

I thought so too. This is the first time I heard of this being "the black Woodstock". Then again this festival here could've been the black Monterrey Pop Festival for all we know. [Edited 6/29/10 16:43pm] | |

Both "Harlem cultural festival" and "Wattstax" are refered in articles as the "Black Woodstock" Harlem festival came first July 1969 Woodstock was Aug 1969 and Wattstax was in 1972 and was only limited to the recordlable Stax.
The "Black woodstock" thing was never an official name, just something media came up with.
