I have been planning for 4 years to go but now, since I started a new job and New Orleans is 2.5 hours away. confused I can't -b/c by the time I get off of work and get ready, and drive there plus the traffic in between, etc - I will be only there to see Janet and her 1 hour show. It would cost me too much money ...Now if Prince came down, i wouldn't care how much or how little of the show I would see. So, no - I'll just wait for another year sad

Um... let me warm up my vocals
Me ME ME ME ME...U U U U U!

and I heard that Janet's show will be filmed and shown in Europe. I don't understand why the won't just put the whole show on DVD and release it.

Will your Essence show be similar to what you did on your Rock Witchu tour in 2008?

It is going to be similar. The Rock Witchu (show) was two hours and 15 minutes. They wanted me to do 45 minutes or an hour (at Essence). I actually asked if I could do an hour and a half. And they said sure. I guess they thought maybe I wasn’t up to it, or didn’t want to. But we were happy to.

It’s pretty much the same set. I’m also doing the new single, “Nothing.”

Will you pull a guy from the audience at any point?

Are you kidding me? I’m gonna pull you! But I don’t know what you look like.

I’ll be right next to Tyler Perry.

(laughs) On his left or on his right? I definitely will pull someone from the audience. That’s my favorite part. It’s fun for me.

So overall, the show will have a similar pacing and energy to the Rock Witchu tour?

Very up, up, up.

So...

RWU tour set

and one of her dancers said that the show will air live tomorrow in Europe. Idk what channel but I hope someone records it pray

Dang....I know what u mean. It doesn't sound like it will be that good. I hope she is just saying this. Of course, the RWU setlist wasn't that bad, it was the costumes and staging I had issues with.

Janet Jackson performs at Essence in New Orleans

AP – FILE - Janet Jackson arrives at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute gala, in New York. Jackson …

NEW ORLEANS – It's been two years since singer Janet Jackson performed on a concert stage and her fans say that's been two years too long.

Jackson marks her stage return Friday with an opening night, first-time performance at the Essence Music Festival inside the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.

"I'm excited, we're excited," Jackson said in an interview prior to her appearance. "It's been awhile since I've been on stage and we're just excited to get back out there."

Fans got a glimpse of her new, sassy, short-cropped hair and her signature, shapely figure on the finale show of American Idol where she rocked classics like "Again" and "Nasty" and her latest release, "Nothing," from the soundtrack of the movie, "Why Did I Get Married Too?," which she also starred in.

Will Bias, a frequent fest-goer from New Orleans, said he is definitely looking forward the show.

"I've never seen her perform live, only on TV, so I'm just wondering what to expect," he said. "I know it's going to be good, though. She's been away for so long, she's probably got some surprises in store for us."

Michelle Ebanks, president of Essence Communications Inc., was as excited as fans to be able to hear Jackson sing some of her hits in person. She said festival organizers had extended invitations to perform numerous times over the course of the last 15 years and this year she finally accepted.

"Prayer works," Ebanks said laughing.

The festival is celebrating the magazine's 40th anniversary this year and Ebanks said they wanted to do so by putting the spotlight on strong, powerful female artists. In addition to Jackson, the lineup includes Gladys Knight, Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott, Alicia Keys, Monica, Keri Hilson, Chrisette Michele, Lalah Hathaway, Melanie Fiona, Estelle, Ledisi, Laura Izibor and New Orleans' own Irma Thomas.

"It means a great deal for me to be in the company of such wonderful women, women who I have the pleasure of knowing personally," Jackson said. "I'm especially honored to be able to play on a stage that also hosts Gladys Knight. She watched me grow up and I remember her being around the Motown family when I was a kid. It's definitely an honor."

Jackson, 44, said she has wanted to come to the festival previously but a jam-packed schedule didn't allow it.

"It didn't really permit me this time either, but because I really wanted to do it, we've worked it in," she said.

Rehearsals have been squeezed in between her other projects.

"On my days off from filming, I'm in rehearsals. It's 24 hours, seven days a week, but we're having fun and I'm looking forward to it," she said.

Jackson also is preparing for another movie collaboration with actor-director Tyler Perry, starring in his upcoming film adaptation, "For Colored Girls." She plays the "Red" character in the film, which is based on Ntozake Shange's 1975 Tony Award-nominated play, "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf."

"I'm finally living my dream of acting," said Jackson, who's also starred in Perry's film, "Why Did I Get Married?".

"Don't get me wrong, I'm very thankful for all that God has bestowed upon me as far as singing is concerned, but I never thought I would be a singer," she said. "My father wanted me to sing. I wanted to act. And, now, I'm finally living that dream."

Still, Jackson said she has no plans to stop performing or making music but does see writing and developing scripts in her future. "I'm really drawn to the action stuff and I love sci-fi. That really drives me crazy," she said.

The role of "author" also soon will be attached to her name. "True You," a book that chronicles Jackson's lifelong struggles with weight and self-esteem, is set for release this fall.

"It's not an autobiography, but I tell anecdotes about my life from when I was a kid to now," she said. "Things happen that can affect a child for the rest of their life and I didn't want to just speak to adults about these issues, so the book reflects that."

No, such thing. I'm sure the show will be yet another epic performance and the RWU tour setlist is 2 hrs long so it won't be the same. The costumes were horrible and I hope she doesn't rehash them. She's performing on the stage provided by Essence.

When I say "staging", I mean the way the performers and JJ is featured on stage with the dancers. I think the show will be entertaining and fun, but I'm praying it will be better.

confuse

Well, she has new dancers (if thats what you mean) and the stage is small compared to Janet's tours. So there isn't much to do on stage. I think the show is more up close and personal.

I've finally recuperated from the weekend. Lots of great performances. Janet did tha damn thang, Gladys was awesome, Jill Scott was heaven, MJB was MJB with a side of TI and Trey Songs, Doug E Fresh and Kid n Play turned it OUT! Alicia Keys ass fell on stage. She really need to quit.

But I missed Ledisi and Melanie Fiona cuz I had to pay tribute to Earth Wind and Fire. I have some backstage pics of the last night (the only night I had a purse big enough for my camera) that I'll post eventually. Overall, it was a blast and I hadn't been to Essence since 2004 when P was there but I truly missed NO and had a fabu time. thumbs up!

A lot of people left, but they missed out. EWF sounded GREAT! Philip let us have that falsetto. Verdine's perm was still fly to def. They were even dancing their asses off. So EWF was the highlight of Sunday evening for me. It was great hearing those classics live even tho they didn't sing full songs. Folks were just hating cuz lame ass Maze didn't close YET again. rolleyes

I wonder what was behind Maze not closing this time? I wonder if Frankie wanted more money? I would love to know. As much as I hate to admit it, Maze is a staple in NO for some reason. Maybe the locals were the ones leaving? shrug

Plus, Ledisi and Melanie Fiona were playing at the same time. So I think that the folks who were there for MJB would rather see Melanie or Ledisi instead of EWF. I'm thinking the exodus was largely a generational thing. I heard that Essence offered Frankie an' nem less money and they said no. Hell, ain't closing for 15 years enough???

I don't blame Frankie. I could see if people didn't pay to see them and they didn't sell out, but Essence is crazy as hell. They probably had to pay JJ a pretty penny and ended up giving her part of Frankie's usual money.

Was the audience mostly young people? EWF usually draws huge crowds.
