From EW to Eonline to Deadline, Movieline and Cinematical to AINTITCOOL, the online geeks did a wonderful job giving tribute to Ms. Horne. So who didn't? I guess the tabloid, talk (although The View did a short section on her), entertainment shows and Daily Show/Colbert shows failed.
In closing, anyone and everyone must read this Bootleg file (from one of my fav online site's Film Threat): http://www.filmthreat.com...res/21999/ It's an article on Horne's true film debut (as well including some interesting facts, like, she wasn't the first black artist to have an MGM contract.) I do want to point out that...LENA HORNE...was much MORE than an entertainer! The shit she HAD to ENDURE made it possible for YOU AND ME...to be sitting HERE...having THIS conversation! I won't act like I know what you've been through in YOUR life but I KNOW for a FACT...what I'VE been through! Had there NOT been a LENA HORNE...I WILL testify in front of GOD ALMIGHTY and say I would and could NOT have been who I AM...had LENA HORNE...not had the COURAGE of her convictions to be...HER! It's it and that's that!!! FOR REAL!!! I will love and honor that WOMAN until I...am called home! And at that time...I will make a point of THANKING her...AND the OTHERS like her...that made ME...possible...personally! i think you missed the part where I mentioned her civil rights fight and the reason why I mentioned colbert and the daily show. as a civil rights leader, she deserved coverage on those shows too. excuse me for being too subtle. sosgemini said: Yeah, I'm a bit shocked at the lack of perspective from some of the online sites today. They just don't get how important she is to America's civil rights history. For a spot on perspective:
Time's Richard Corliss said: "Horne might have been black America's first ambassador to the rest of the country — an artist with perfect features and a sultry sweetness, who'd teach the benighted to accept the glamour and talent, the full humanity, of an oppressed minority that had so profoundly enriched the official culture. But blacks in the 1940s were still second-class citizens at best, deprived of the water fountains, bus seats, voting rights and entertainment opportunities taken for granted by whites. So Horne, as determined as she was beautiful, went ahead and fashioned one of the 20th century's most exemplary and poignant show-business careers." For Hatrina lol

I also would like to pay my humble respects to the late and great Lena Horne.
She was a wonderful entertainer/actress/singer/dancer and more during my grandmother's era and has withstood the test of time. I love the stars and the way they looked and carried themselves in the 30's and 40's. My husband and I had a conversation recently about how the celebrities back in the day were very community oriented and were very civil rights oriented. They realized and knew how to use their celebrity status to bring about change for the next generation. I want to take this moment to say a prayer of thanks and gratitude for an individual like Lena Horne. I believe that when you discuss an individual such as Lena Horne on this forum it should be done with great respect and reverance. Thank You Lena for not being afraid to pioneer for equal rights. Thank you for being strong, for being a fighter and for leaving a legacy for us to follow, respect and always remember. Prayers go out to the family and friends of Lena Horne. May her soul rest in perfect peace in the bosom of Christ.

Lena Horne aged so gracefully before her death, I didn't know she was 92 either. RIP!!! The message you are about to hear are not meant for transmission. Should ONLY be accessed in the privacy of your mind. Words are so intense so if you dare to listen.Take off your clothes and meet me between the lines.

Well said. Did anyone watch 'American Masters: Lena Horne in Her Own Words' on PBS tonight? Great stuff! And it doesn't matter if the "mainstream" acknowlegdes Miss Lena or not. WE BLACK FOLKS have to do it. It's up to US to keep this great woman's memory alive, like Timmy said.

From what I read Lena Horne was a compassionate, upright, intelligent, considerate, caring, and principled lady as well as a beautiful entertainer.
And still she led a life that included substantial sadness, while always standing tall and strong with her head held high. More people with her character are needed on the planet. Music is for lovers.

That's why she wasn't on the People cover. There was no scandal there, just pure respectability. There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.
