Sorry to hear that. Many of the legends are going away from us. It's sad to know that artists/entertainers I grew up watching are no longer here. I pray for her family, friends and her fans. We lost another shining star.

Rest well, dear Lena! You had a lot of weight to carry on your beautiful shoulders and you never buckled. Thank you! This is also my favorite performance the "Horne". I remember when I was in the movie theater I had a feeling being proud and feeling all tingly cuz she sings it with such vigor. I always was floored by her beauty...she was just beautiful and regal....she made you pull your shoulders back when watching her perform...she was one of a kind. That makes me so frustrated with my generation. They don't know their own history and act like they're proud of it "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

They hardly even know who Prince is [Edited 5/9/10 22:14pm] ----- This is true and very sad. Young people have no frame of reference for anything beyond their time frame. Which is very different from how things were when I was growing up. You knew people like Lena Horne because your parents exposed you to them. I agree but I was born in '92 and because of my nana grew up knowing who people like lena horne and dorothy dandridge were and being opened up to there music and films. The majority of the music and films i watch and listen to are from the 40's-60's. I dont have much interest in the stuff that's out now like most people my age. "All that glitters ain't gold"

I dont think that would be a good idea since lena didn't want janet to potray her after the super bowl incident and it'd be best to respect her wishes. I did read though oprah had planned on doing a movie on lena and was thinking about having Alicia Keys play her. "All that glitters ain't gold"

Janet is too old, I have a strong hunch Alicia can't act and Paula Patton and Halle are too old to play her. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Yeah, I'm a bit shocked at the lack of perspective from some of the online sites today. They just don't get how important she is to America's civil rights history. For a spot on perspective:
Time's Richard Corliss said: "Horne might have been black America's first ambassador to the rest of the country — an artist with perfect features and a sultry sweetness, who'd teach the benighted to accept the glamour and talent, the full humanity, of an oppressed minority that had so profoundly enriched the official culture. But blacks in the 1940s were still second-class citizens at best, deprived of the water fountains, bus seats, voting rights and entertainment opportunities taken for granted by whites. So Horne, as determined as she was beautiful, went ahead and fashioned one of the 20th century's most exemplary and poignant show-business careers." Space for sale...

After reading everyone else's responses I'm kinda embarrassed to say that I hated her voice and her acting. I never understood where the talent was with her. I did like her in Cabin In The Sky though, but it's hard to compete against Ethel Waters' performance. RIP Lena "Keep in mind that I'm an artist...and I'm sensitive about my shit."--E. Badu
