NEWARK, Ohio - The man behind pop-music classics "Get Down Tonight" and "Boogie Shoes" has been arrested in Licking County and accused of having sexual contact with a teenage boy.

Richard Finch, 56, co-founder of KC and the Sunshine Band, was arrested Tuesday by deputies with the Licking County Sheriff's office. He is being held on a $250,000 bond on a charge of gross sexual imposition, according to court records.

A juvenile boy contacted the sheriff's office last week, saying Finch had sexual contact with him at Finch's home, Sgt. Chris Slayman said.

During an interview with detectives, Finch admitted to having sexual contact with the boy as well as several other boys ages 13 to 17, Slayman said.

The conduct apparently had taken place for the past several months, and Slayman said detectives were in the process of interviewing other possible victims. The case will be presented to a grand jury, he said.

Finch and the boy met through their shared interest in the music industry, Slayman said.

Finch started KC and the Sunshine Band with Harry "KC" Casey in 1973 in Florida. Finch, who played bass for the band, has won seven Grammy Awards and 12 Grammy nominations.

Published media interviews on Finch''s Web site indicate that Finch has worked with several young, all-male music acts for the past few years at a home recording studio outside Newark.

Finch's publicist could not be reached for comment.

Janet Lieb is the manager of her son's band, To Be Continued, which has recorded at Finch's studio on three occasions. The band traveled to Ohio from their hometown of Dubuque, Iowa, a couple of years ago after meeting Finch through their MySpace page.

Lieb said she knows the music industry from touring as a professional musician in the 1980s, and she is very careful about the people who interact with her son. She said in all the band's dealings with Finch he was a consummate professional, and never gave her any reason to think he was interested in anything other than recording the boys' music.


"There was nothing that ever even hinted that I should be alarmed," she said.
