I even heard D'Angelo was the next Prince eek

Who said dat?

You have to read between the lines in people's praise of him. They even called him the "next Marvin Gaye" if you read news articles on his arrests. "He was supposed to be the next Marvin"... I rolleyes whenever I read that.

ANY R&B singer with a tenor/falsetto and is good-looking... rolleyes It's like "damn can you let them be the best they can be?" disbelief

As if comparisons make sense. No one said Marvin was the next Sam Cooke or Stevie Wonder was the next Ray Charles, did they? Motown tried that with the latter and realized it wouldn't work because Stevie was more skilled and had a different voice lol

Another issue with people being called "The Next"....is longevity and connection

Acts these days are usually in one day, out the next. There's no anticipation, no excitement

for example, you don't see people clamoring in anticipation for Justin Timberlake's new album. You don't see mass hysteria for stars anymore

It's different these days.

Michael had grown ass folks crying and passing out at his concerts lol

Exactly. There's no more excitement. It's like the labels have dumbed down their approach. So anyone that comes out is "the next something" it's getting real ridiculous. It's like they're saying "y'all ain't shit compared to this person and that person but you're close" lol

That's just it, they shouldn't be compared. Madonna, MJ, Prince, etc. Just stop it. That's why these current artists can't ever be "original" because people will always spot out that someone did it 20 years ago. Everyone is just saying "shut up with the comparing".

You and I BOTH remember when Dangerous came out. We remember the anticipation for the premiere of Black or White. Moments like that don't happen these days

EXACTLY! We were on pins and needles when MJ brought out "Dangerous". Nowadays, you already know about what's going on with the video before you know about it and then see it and it turns you off.

Who cares, why are people so butthurt over this. There is always a artist of this generation that they compared from the past nothing new. We know she not on MJ level so why give questlove the time, questlove can run his mouth and continue to be on that mediocre show called jimmy fallon. That déjà vu song timmy played for me yesterday need to be my theme song when I’m here. and we not in the 50's , 60 's ,70's , 80's ,hell 90's anymore , Music has went downhill and continue to. No matter what artists will always be compared deal with the shit that's out now and played a old michael album and call it a day.

It's the media who compares not the artists , we all can't be Michael , We all can't be prince . Some are influence and try to put their own spin on it. Beyonce shouldn't be in the same sentence as Michael I never got the Michael vibe from her , I always thought of a poorwoman Tina Turner but still it's a broken record.Don't like them don't listen. beatdeadhorse

Why can we just all shut up and enjoy the music? If you like MJ you like MJ, if you like Madonna you like Madonna, if you like Britney you like Britney, if you like Gaga you like Gaga, if you like Beyonce you like Beyonce, if you like Prince you like Prince. They're all individual people. There always has to be some debate, some comparison, who can top who and it's tired. Beyonce will never be next Michael Jackson because she's not him.

It's not really a debate, it's basically a discussion on how originality in the music industry seems forgotten. Not to mention the standard is lower these days.....

Exactly. And I actually do think the media is as much to blame for it. I think if it was a debate, we'd talk about how the artists they compare to "suck" lol

Does anybody really care about what a hack drummer with a jacked up fro has to say?

The only drummers who are stars are Karen Carpenter and Sheila E.

Questlove couldn't be anymore wrong.

People got it all wrong. It's not about how popular you are, or how many records you sell, that doesn't matter, and your not gonna be "the next michael jackson" that doesn't make any sense you'd have to be Michael Jackson. What people should be looking for is who is going to add on to what Michael Jackson did. Not who is more talented. who is a better singer. who is a better dancer. None of that matters. It's not about being better. That just comes down to opinion. It's who is gonna follow in his footsteps and add something to it.

You gotta be talented, original, educated, take major risks, have a message, compelling on stage, potential trend setter, creative, etc. etc. etc.

If there is anyone out there right now who COULD follow in Michael Jackson's footsteps... It's Janelle Monae

Def. not Lady Gaga or Beyonce.
