Soul singer Teddy Pendergrass dies in Pa. at 59

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A relative says soul singer Teddy Pendergrass has died in suburban Philadelphia at age 59.

The singer's son, Teddy Pendergrass II, says his father died Wednesday at Bryn Mawr Hospital.

Pendergrass' son says his father underwent colon cancer surgery eight months ago and had "a difficult recovery."

The elder Pendergrass was injured in a car accident in 1982. He suffered a spinal cord injury and was paralyzed from the waist down. He spent six months in a hospital but returned to recording the next year with the album "Love Language."

His son thanks all the fans of his father's music and says he will live on through his songs. He says the singer was loved by friends and family worldwide.

Damn....R.I.P. Teddy! You know I felt something in my spirit that something drastic was gonna happen sometime today or tomorrow. I wasn't expecting this though.

I grew up near Philly and Philly loves their own. WDAS bumped Teddy, Grover Washington, Pieces of a Dream and Patti Labelle all day, everyday.

I wasn't born or was too young to remember him when he was at his peak, but I saw Teddy here in Brooklyn at a free concert in the park a few years ago and his voice was still in top form. I must have been like 14 then, but after I saw him in concert, I went out and bought his greatest hits cd and played "Love T.K.O" all the time to the point that I started to annoy everyone in my family. Love that song. I also love "And If I Had", "The Whole Town's Laughing At Me", "Close The Door" (of course) and much more. Damn, Teddy could saaaaang.

Voices like his are not in our generation. He was a true soul singer.

Like Kenny Gamble said, he's not suffering anymore.

This is tragic, but I know that he's free now. I know what it's like to be paralyzed and in a wheelchair, imagine going through that for 27-28 years. R*I*P Brother
