Jackson, Cohen, Lynn and more to get lifetime achievement Grammys

Cohen, Jackson to get Grammy lifetime awards

Canadian music icon Leonard Cohen, country legend Loretta Lynn and the late Michael Jackson will be honoured with lifetime achievement prizes at the coming Grammy Award celebrations, organizers announced Thursday.

Montreal-born Cohen, the King of Pop and Lynn, the beloved "Coal Miner's Daughter," will be joined on this year's roll call by classical pianist and composer André Previn, jazz trumpeter Clark Terry, Delta blues artist David (Honeyboy) Edwards and the late singer-songwriter Bobby Darin.

"This year's honourees are a prestigious group of diverse and prominent creators who have contributed some of the most distinguished and influential recordings," Neil Portnow, president and CEO of the U.S. Recording Academy, said in a statement.

"Their outstanding accomplishments and passion for their craft have created a timeless legacy that has positively affected multiple generations, and will continue to influence generations to come."

Loretta Lynn, seen performing in June in Fort Collins, Colo., will be among the latest Grammy lifetime achievement award recipients. (Michael G. Seamans/The Fort Collins Coloradoan/Associated Press)The lifetime achievement award celebrates performers for their valuable artistic contributions to the recording industry, while a corresponding prize — the trustee award — toasts the contributions of non-performers in the music industry.

The newest recipients of the latter honour include:

Country Music Hall of Fame member Harold Bradley, who built early Nashville recording studio the Quonset Hut.
Pioneering Scepter Records founder Florence Greenberg, the first woman to own and run a major record label.
Producer-director Walter C. Miller.
Organizers will also pay tribute to microphone and headphone designer AKG as well as Thomas Edison, whose many inventions included the phonograph.

This year's special Grammy Award laureates will be honoured during a gala on Jan. 30 in Los Angeles.

They will also be acknowledged the following evening during the live Grammy Award television broadcast on Jan. 31.

I'm surprised they didn't try to use some dumb ass loophole to get Thriller a nomination for Album of the Year, again.

Right, because I think that showering people who passed away with awards they wouldn't get while alive is stupid, I must be bitter.

You telling me Ray Charles would've won Album of the Year if he was still alive???

Just maybe he deserved to.

Michael was always going to be honoured upon his death, and deservedly so.

Considering how many times I've owned Thriller in the past 18 years....I should be the one to collect the award lol

bitter much confused he doesn't have a lifetime achievment award from the grammy's.

they usualy give to artist when they're old but michael isn''t gonna get any older so why not now. he deserves every award hr gets. i'm still mad at the grammy's for snubbing him the last 20 years and they know they're wrong for what they did in 1988

Jesus, just because I don't wanna worship Michael Jackson and nominate him for Sainthood doesn't make me bitter!

Again, I ask do you think Ray Charles deserved Album of the Year after he died?

How did the Grammys "snub" Michael Jackson? By giving Album of the Year to a better Record???

Stop it. Bad was maybe the 3rd or 4th best album that year. I'll give it top 5, maybe.

Damn, stop whining and bitching about Micheal Jackson getting a Lifetime Achievement Award and who cares if Ray Charles won "Album of The Year" posthumously. Rarely are people awarded for their best work anyway. Talk to Denzel Washington about it. Some of y'all overreact about awards worse than Kanye West.

The only people bitching and whining are everyone else who seem to have a problem with my opinion.

So please, at least act like you know what you're talking about next time.

I just finished studying for some hours so I may be a little confused.

No one is disrespecting you or your opinion. This is a forum meant for people to DISCUSS things related to music. If you don't want to be contradicted (look at the way you reacted when someone DARED to contradict your opinion!) then don't come here. If you think that, everytime someone doesn't agree with you, that someone is disrespecting you or being an worshipper, then you definitely have a mental problem. Two slaps in the face along with some therapy won't hurt.

Your opinion on Jackson is indifferent to me. However, to even claim he doesn't deserve the awards he receives, or whatever you claimed, is laughable. You will start insulting and telling me that I worship Mihael Jackson and that I'm not respecting your opinion which is, nedless to say, untrue. But, hey, don't get surprised if I ignore you, then. After all, I'm just a girl who happens to have a high IQ. And, in that aspect, I may well be disrespecting yours.

Girl, I'm in the 3rd grade of the Medicine degree. I want to be a psychiatrist and I've eaten hundreds of books related to that profession. Okay, I mnay have overreacted and I'm sorry.

I'm not that kinda poster. I just get really annoyed when TV shows use dead people to boost their ratings.

Is Michael Jackson worthy of a Lifetime Achievement Award? Of course he is.

I just think that all this is just ploy for ratings.

Jermaine is mostly likely gonna accept the award, and he's been using Michael to further his own career. Or lack their off.

Actually, the entire Jackson Family has been doing this.

All this B.S. started when the AMA's nominated and actually awarded Michael for awards. Even though he didn't actually put out any music this year.

Then Jermaine and his big, greasy forehead goes on stage, and he brings his poor kids on stage with their moronic names that are just tributes to his ego.

Jermaine and Michael haven't been that close in recent years, and I see why. He's as big as an opportunist as Papa Joe.

I completely agree with everything you said. biggrin

I overreacted as well and I apologize for that. BTW, I also despise the Jackson clan (with the exception of Michael and his three kids).

true, i wouldn't put it past the grammy board to be in it for the ratings.

i didn't watch the AMAs, but some people have said that jermaine barely mentioned mj and didn't mention mj's kids at all when he accepted mj's awards. i wonder if he'll mention mj at all at the grammys. you should see some of the reviews for the 'reality show'. brutal and unkind; but then again you can't expect people not to see the show for what it is - opportunism.

i agree but i think they usually give these things to people when their careers are either over or soon coming to an end. maybe they expected michael to do more and award him this in his later years cause i knew eventually he was gonna get this. but now that he's gone he isn't gonna get any older and they probably wanna join in on the jackson love fest and boost their ratings.

ps. their tribute better be good, they've had since june to plan this
