I'm confused here...didn't Frampton have an album that was the biggest selling of all time (at one point) where full songs were sung with the vocoder? And i'm not trying to be an arse or anything it's just...i'd always assumed it was Frampton who is credited and not Roger...

and I have zero faith in anything anyone says on these Unsung shows...as Jody Watley herself said on her facebook page, half the shit they claimed was BS. lol She was pissed.

Vocodors are different than the talk box machine.

but sonically, they sound the same right? i don't want to take away from roger cause I love some of his stuff but i think it's kinda silly to split hairs like that...its revisionist history...

however, i might just might be butthurt cause i can't stand that woman anymore or anything she's making money off of. lol

Nope,,,,

Talkbox

Vocodor

I can understand the confusion to distinct between the two though,,,,but both are played differently, the talk box is more physical while the vocodor is more computer-oriented.

And to answer your ?uestion, Roger wasn't the 1st who came up with it but as it has been established, he put it on the forefront and made a musical statement out of it when it was considered mainly as a novelty. Just like the trumpet was treated as a novelty/OR military instrument befor Louis Armestrong.

theAudience posted couple of youtube clips from the 50s/40s that has per4mances from movies where the talk box got showcased.

Thanks Harle, I just checked google and Frampton did indeed use a talkbox. Ironically, it was Stevie Wonder that inspired him to get one. So, I still don't see how Roger could get credit when Frampton had it featured heavily on one of the biggest selling albums on all time. You know?

Maybe because Frampton used it experimentally whereas Roger used it exclusively. You have to realize that alot of us wouldn't even recognise Roger's singing voice without the talk box,,,,,basically it gave him a niche(for lack of a better term) beside his OWN usage of tricks to make it sound different.

Roger is the king of the talkbox.

Did you guys know that "More Bounce To The Ounce" is the second most sampled song of all time, after JB's "Funky Drummer"?

Even people who don't know funk know Roger cos of cuts like "California Love" smile

Sly was the first pop musician to do the vocoder, Stevie was the first pop musician to do talk box. Peter Frampton does the talk box with his guitar (so does Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi). Roger Troutman was inspired by Stevie. Difference with Roger is he perfected it in a way where his was widely imitated. He Marvin Gaye-d his talk box by adding multiple vocal parts in there. Stevie & Peter didn't do that.

Yep, the first time I had ever seen Prince live was on the Controversy tour in Feb, 82. It was a show at the Santa Monica Civic and on the bill was Zapp, The Time and Prince. The show was absolutely KILLIN'!. I've seen Zapp several times after that but then when he opened for Prince, that was my first. Roger was definately a big time Prince fan and he showed his love in a few tracks...."It Really Doesn't Matter" and "Itchin' For Your Twitch" which is a straight bite from "Sexy Dancer". Roger even sings the hook from "Irristible Bitch" but instead he says "Irristible Itch...you're driving me Delirious"...I always wished that Roger and P had worked together back in the 80's. THAT shit would have been sho' nuff BANGIN'! Roger and P had similar sensibilties and similar influences as well. Both loved the fuck out of James Brown. Although P was already doing Brown's guitarist Jimmy Nolen type rhythm guitar on "Sexy Dancer",..it wasn't untill Roger turned the shit completely OUT on his guitar on "More Bounce To The Ounce". Which to me, is one of the most funkiest tracks ever known to exist on this earth. I remember when P came out with the track "Controversy" in 81, P's guitar playing on that always reminded me of Roger's playing on "More Bounce". The parts are totally different but the feel and the vibe reminds me of each other. I have NO doubt that P adored "More Bounce" as well as the O.G. Gangsta Crip/Blood anthem "So Ruff So Tuff". funkpill might even remember a thread I did on here a few years ago on "More Bounce/Controversy" where I went more into depth about the atmosphere of that time and the impact those two songs, along with "So Ruff So Tuff" had on folks!
Those 3 songs are 3 of my all time faves from anyone....

Exactly...Roger was also a smokin' lead rock guitarist as well. He would showcase that here and there on some of Zapp's albums but it really showed more in a live setting.

There isn't lol

I think Roger & Prince are compared because both of them basically did all the music for whatever they were doing. If you saw it, Roger played a dozen of instruments like Prince.

"give praise 2 Prince because you sound so good to me, get on down!" cool

I love how he shouted most of the greats:

"Stevie Wonder
Rick James
Charlie Wilson and the Gap Band
Roger Troutman and the Zapp Band
Cameo and Grandmaster (Flash)

Aretha she's the queen
James Brown he's the king..."

And on and on...

the full lyric bigging up Prince is ".....and now we got the Minneapolis connection....thank you Prince! Cos you sound so good to me, get on down!"

"It Doesn't Really Matter" is kinda under-rated in terms of the Zapp catalog (of course Zapp as a band are hella under-rated as a whole), but I think it's one of their best and funkiest jams.

Nope,...look above at my post. ^^^ Look at the date and the venue where I stated seeing ohim on the Controversy tour. I also already stated that it was the first time I myself had seen Prince. The ticket was only $9.75! Avalon Presents...I remember that, dawg! The Time also played at The Roxy out here in So Cal two days after on the 14th. I know that was the only show P played that year out here because I missed out on seeing him when he was last out here when he played at Flipper's on Mar 31, 81 during his Dirty Mind tour. I saw P again out here in L.A on Mar 28, 83 ( a day after my birthday) where it was just Vanity 6 who opened. Then I saw him again a few days later at Long Beach Arena on Mar 31,83 where The Time was added to the bill and was allowed to play. P's managenment didn't book The Time at the Universal Amphitheater show on Mar 28 during the 1999 tour because that was a big time show where a lot of celebs showed up to, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Stevie Nicks, etc. So P didn't want to chance getting upstaged by The Time. so on that show it was just Vanity 6 and then P. 3 days later at Long Beach Arena, it was V6, The Time and then P.

"I Can Make You Dance", "Dance Floor" and "Itchin For Your Twitchin" has some cool rock leads on it by Roger. Like I mentioned before, Roger didn't include many rock solos on their albums obviously. BUT, he would break out with it in concert.

I remember when I was younger, James Brown was so unique.....

There no doubt about it
Things remain the same
Time after time day after day
Things remain the same

Stevie Wonder.. Rick James... Charles Wilson and the Gab Band, Roger Troutman in the Zapp Band...Cameo... Graham Central, Aretha, she's the Queen.. James Brown, he's the King.

So many
Played them all
Loved them all
They sound so good
Do you rememberrrr

Then.....
