George Clinton: Lehman Center For The Performing Arts - Nov 7, 2009

Just saw George Clinton last night at The Lehman Center For The Performing Arts in the Bronx, NY. Had a great time, took a few pics. Here's the review I left for George on his MySpace page:

Hey George! I saw you guys at the Lehman Center in The Bronx last night, great performances (...but probably not the best venue, lol).

In so many ways, it was the best P-Funk concert I've ever been to (out of the dozens I've attended since 1977). I have never been so close to the stage; at times, I was gazing at you from TWO FEET!!! That was a trip! (...and blew my mind a little bit, lol).

In addition, EVERYONE was on point: I felt like Ms. Belita Woods was singing to me personally, and she was enchanting. Moreover, I was a little surprised by Kendra Foster. I had seen her perform with you many times in the past, but perhaps because I was so close to the stage, or perhaps it was the intimate setting, but that girl really worked! Very tight performance, and kept it hot even as she faded back in with the background singers. I was very impressed by her.

Then there was the Red Hot Mama on roller-skates!!! WOW! I don't know how she does that! Moreover, when she dropped to the floor kicking over the mic stand; if that was an accident or because she was "Feeling The Funk" you could not tell, because she kept going! She could be on Broadway, very talented and professional.

Michael (Kid Funkadelic) Hampton did his thing. I think he carries "Maggot Brain" with the honor and respect it deserves. I think that's the one moment when time itself is suspended, when he plays that song. And I could see on his face that he really felt the love that he was receiving last night, lol. That was good to see, I like Mike a lot.

Then there I was, standing face to face with Gary Shider!!! How many hits has this man written?!? LOL. At times, I felt like I was dreaming, then I would snap out of it and realize... "NO, THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING!" lol. And Poo-Poo Man ALWAYS brings it! LOL. Good seeing P-Nut Johnson also, I always feel like... "Yeah, this is REALLY P-Funk" when I see him on stage. And MAN! Those girls next to me were WORKING RonKat for his boots! LOL. It's good to see him in there paying his P-Funk dues. I was just blown away by EVERYONE!

However, the thing was: Lehman Center For The Performing Arts is an official theater, lol. The next performers at Lehman Center are the "VIRSKY UKRAINIAN NATIONAL DANCE COMPANY", lol. Therefore, everyone's ticket had him or her assigned to a very specific seat (...luckily mine was front row center right, lol), so it was really hard to generate a lot of energy when half the house was seated at any given time. Moreover, the seats were very comfortable, lol. So at times, even I was sitting there, sort of mesmerized by what all was going on in front of me on stage, getting lost in the buzz of the moment, like I was watching it on TV, before I'd realize: "Hey wait a minute! Get UP!!! This is P-Funk!!!!" LOL.

I'm used to either seeing P-Funk in a nightclub or arena setting. Therefore, that's why last night's show presented me with a real dichotomy. It was the best experience I've ever had, in that I felt the most connected with everyone on stage. Nevertheless, at the same time the venue was "unusual", lol.

How would I rate the time I had at the Lehman Center last night on a scale of 1 - 10? TEN!!! Thanks so much George, for everything. Live long & prosper!

Cool! How long did they play? What were some tunes that you remember? Any surprises?

They played for about 2 and a half hours, from around 8:45 to about 11:15 or so. They played most of their hits, but on that note... I even had a pad & pen and was going to keep track of their exact playlist (because I knew I wanted to report it here), but about 5 minutes into the first song, I forgot all about keeping track, lol.

But Gary Shider led a very nice, slower version of "(Not Just) Knee Deep" that sticks out in my mind as having been special. Along with the sax & "scat" work of Greg Thomas (I never really noticed how much he contributes, doubling on keyboards, sax AND vocals). Another stand-out for me was Kendra Foster. I'm not easily impressed by a lot of George's protege's, but she did a pretty awesome job.

But I guess my biggest surprise came on a more personal level, and that was just how close I was "ON" the stage. It's a real trip when George Clinton is staring directly in your eyes when he's singing and gesturing to you in the audience. That both freaked me out AND blew me away, lol.

Yeah, P-Nut to me seems to be so real and down to earth. He used to always come out into the audience and have drinks with everybody when they used to play at "Tramps" here in NYC. It was such a trip to be right up on these brothers that I have idolized my entire life. My self-identity as a Funkateer was validated last night (once again)... big time.

Thanks man. From the perspective I was at, I just wish I had thought to bring a better camera (...this one was only 1-megapixel).

Cool.

I meet those guys back in '93 @ Club Lexington of Turtle Creek here in Dallas.
That whole night was wild.

Bootsy, Kash, Razor Sharp, Bernie, Bone and others..
After the show they were all hanging out. I know what you mean, to have those brothers that close and to see that they are human just like you.

I dig those smaller venues.
