How Many Vinyls Do You Own? Well I wondered just how many vinyls I owned. And being the archivist that I am, I decided to sit in the floor, and put them all into a spreadsheet on Excel.

I'm currently working on methodically listing them, but the list is nowhere near complete. My guess is that I have around 800 vinyl albums at the moment. I guess that's a pretty respectable number, considering the fact that I've only collected vinyl for about three years, and I'm only 22 years old. Hopefully, my collection will continue to grow On the Org since 2005.

I love collecting vinyl. I sat down w/ my laptop and Excel and just typed them up in about 30 minutes. But I type fast, too. Ernest L Sewell, IV

I am a fast typer, as well, but I get caught up wanting to listen to the stuff as well as type it down, so that slows the process down quite a bit On the Org since 2005.

I never did a spreadsheet, but I appreciate the person who will do this! Well they're not hard when you're just typing in two columns, which is what I do for this project. First column is artist, second is title. That simple. I use a spreadsheet because no matter what order I type them in, I can sort them alphabetically after the fact. Ernest L Sewell, IV

I have a couple hundred albums and a few dozen 45s. I had more but a so called friend of mine claims he lost a couple of boxes when he was helping me move. I still think the SOB probably pawned them. Me too, even though I have them all on my MP3's and my Ipod,I'll always keep them. Looks like everyone here has more albums than I have but I have more 45s than they have. You really think you have a lot of albums until you put them on a built-in bookcase and that's when they look small in comparison to the bookcase. I have my albums on one shelf and they take up about three fourths of the shelf. Then I have my 12 Inch singles on another shelf which take up about two thirds of the shelf. In the leftover space on the two shelves, I have my 45s stacked in about six stacks and they are tall stacks that almost reach the bottom of the shelf above them. Just an eyeball estimate, I'd say I have about 100 albums, 100 12 inches, and about 500 45s. My grandmother bought me an album for birthday and Christmas presents, or if she wanted to bribe me to not go somewhere. Other than that, every single weekend, she either bought me one 12 Inch or three 45s. Since an album wasn't an every weekend thing, I only bought albums by people that I knew were going to have the majority of the tracks as jams with around two slow jams at the most on the album. Most of my albums are by male funk bands like The Barkays, Cameo, Zapp, etc. And of course Prince and Rick James and all their protegees. Folks that I knew were going to deliver the jams. As for folks like Deneice Williams or Ashford and Simpson, those types of artists are the ones I bought 45s because I knew their full albums wouldn't have a lot of hard jams on them. . . . All my creates have a specific theme them, Rick James and anything Punk Funk has it's own creates, the same for the whole Jackson family, Prince and crew, P-Funk, The Slave dynasty, The Godfather and crew, SOLAR, Jazz, Hip Hop, etc..... I have about 1000 45's, 50 of them I've had since I was a little kid, the other 950+ I got from my uncle who had them in his basement in a trash bag and wasn't thinking about them, there were tons of 45's from the 60's in those bags. I know! Same for me. Upon last count (about 15 years ago) I was at about 300 albums and 12 inch singles. I've added a lot more since then. I have more cds than I have vinyl. I think i have about 2000 cds (singles and albums). [Edited 11/2/09 9:02am] **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I donated about 3500 vinyl albums to charity three or so years back. I have no real regrets other than wishing I had catalogued them to have a record of what I'd had. I still have about 350 or so records that I regarded as keepers when I culled the herd, but I plan on getting rid of those sometime this winter. I haven't had a functioning turntable in ages, and if I've managed to survive without listening to them for this long then there's no sense clinging to them. Most economic fallacies derive from the tendency to assume that there is a fixed pie, that one party can gain only at the expense of another. | |
