Richard X's version is pretty good as well.. too bad I can't find a clip of it anywhere. "The same freedom you feel, is what's been blowing in my sail, since I arrived here."

Don't even start on the Bacharach/David/Warwick triumvirate. That legacy of songs is untouchable. tA Tribal Disorder

I really like Melissa Manchester's version of "Walk On By" from her 1989 album Tribute. Next to Dionne's original, it's my 2nd favorite version.

I wanted to do a thread for each one of these versions at some point, but decided today I would do sorta, like, a "Walk On By" sticky.

Why does it feel like The Stranglers were trying to take the piss out of a classic though?

I'm not sure what year that cover is from, but The Stranglers early career was basically one long piss-take. Most economic fallacies derive from the tendency to assume that there is a fixed pie, that one party can gain only at the expense of another.

I strive, in life, to be an open, understanding and accepting person, but I get upset when anyone says they prefer one of the latter versions to Dionne's. Blanche: Oh, I do love the rain so! It reminds me of my first kiss.
Dorothy: Awww, your first kiss was in the rain... Blanche: No, it was in the shower.
