DJ Quik should have been the sixth member of N.W.A. He even has a hip-hop classic about Compton that is just as well known as Straight Outta Compton:

Born And Raised In Compton

BTW, remember the times that Easy-E & DJ Quik almost became a spin-off group in itself?

I stopped following his music right after his first album came out but that was way back when....I never could get into his music, really. But thanks for the links, it seems that he´s getting better and better as a musician the older he gets.
Are there any instrumental albums by him ? I like those Quik grooves that are on YouTube.

Some of those YouTube comments are hilarious.....I mean, I´m sure he´s a good producer but...a modern day Beethoven ? I don´t think so.
However, I prefer DJ Quik over Beethoven any day. Thanks for the info Harlepolis.

Some funny YouTube post:

"
i dont know anyone who can hate on this joint. hes a true musical mastermind, this is some modern day beethoven shit"

lol Some kids ....just love to compare anything to Mozart and Beethoven.

Don´t they know that Pharell is the new Beethoven? lol

For my money, Quik might well be the greatest hip-hop producer of all time, and certainly the best from the West.

I own all his albums, which is a big deal since none of them were officially released in the UK I don't think. On the rare occasion I'd see a Quik album in a UK record store it would be an extortionately priced import.

Pre-Internet, I would ask my American cousin to bring me over Quik's new shit when he visited, and of course I'd snap up whatever I could find whenever I was in the US and still do (managed to get the new Quik and Kurupt CD, BlaQKout, when I was in Canada a couple of months ago).

And I was so happy to see that Visualism DVD in a local independant record store one day here in Birmingham, UK. American import of course (lucky I have a regionless dvd player), and I probably paid more than $50 for it, but I don't mind.

Quik is the motherfucking truth! He's talented, a multi-instrumentalist, obviously a huge fan and student of funk, and he's dope on the mic as well. He's done movie scores, the Quik's Groove instrumental pieces that you guys have mentioned already, and his productions for other artists are well worth tracking down as well (especially his work with Suga Free).

I don't understand how he doesn't get his props. I think he's far more talented than Dre, and don't get me wrong, I love Dre, but Dre doesn't play the instruments himself and he doesn't write his raps either. Dre's a genius in terms of getting the right people together to create the sound he hears in his head, and knowing what's a hit and the directions hip-hop should move in, and to that end he's made at least 3 classic albums that have completely changed the sonicscope of hiphop (Straight Outta Compton, The Chronic, and 2001).....but beat for beat, groove for groove, song for song, rhyme for rhyme - he's not fucking with Quik in my opinion and there aren't many that can.

I'd love to catch one of his legendary live shows that he does with a full band at the House of Blues. Too bad I don't live in LA.

As an artist myself I would love to work with Quik one day. And I might just have a way in too smile a good friend of mine who is anR&B singer is dating a girl that has sang on some of Quik's songs. I don't yet know how I'm gonna make that connection but I'm damn sure gonna try! lol lol

Nah, you're not the only one who thinks this. I always thought Quik's material was cool. I think the cat's somewhat underated. Especially compared to Dre.

Great set nod

I love his 2 set "Instrumentals" bootleg as well, some of them are for other artists.

Another, I loved his R&B work as well...

And KoolEaze,,,,

You'll have to use this when you read comments like those lol I learned recently never to put much emphasis on the music that I enjoy and what level it should be on. Quik happen to be a gifted brother, I won't analyze that because it takes so much from the enjoyment.

Yes..very interesting guy.

I'm kinda late to the party when it comes to David's music.. it was by happenstance I heard his music from "Rhythm-Al-Ism" Cd, in a boutique a couple of years ago. I've had to backtrack... I read somewhere that David arranged/compose some music for a movie sountrack with a 78 piece orchestra. A self taught musician damn! I think the whole "West Coast/Gansta Rap image" maybe typecasted him as being one dinmensional.

Here's an interview from earlier this summer... Vibe Magazine.

Wow,,,,how about that? eek

The sad thing is, I probably would never think of that coming from him,,,,which proves your point about him being typecasted.

I knew I liked him for a reason.
