Is Lena Horne really all that good of a singer?

I am thinking she is just a Cafe Society type act.

Lena Horne name doesn't come to mind as being amoung the great singers in Jazz (30's, 40's nor 50's) but she could sing. Cafe Society wasn't anything to dismiss, I mean you had to be damn good and do more than just sing/stay on key. I think 'bout time the 60's rolled around, she brought a more seasoned voice to her music and interpreting songs lyrics. Good singer.

I did not mean Cafe Society as dismissive-I was wondering whether Lena could hold her own against the Dinah Washingtons and Ruth Browns.

It is a legitimate question.

Personally, I had my doubts about her untill I heard the recording of her The Lady & Her Music broadway show.

One thing though, Cafe Society is ANYTHING but dismissive lol its actually the place that gave her a form of substance,,,,working alongside Art Tatum, Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Eckstine, Billie Holiday and Hazel Scott.
