Wrong. The falsetto is above the modal range, not below it. Singers use the falsetto when the go above their normal modal voice. All males can sing in falsetto, but not all their falsettos sound a like. A bass singer going above his modal voice into falsetto, for example, will most likely produce a lower falsetto than a tenor voice going into falsetto. Some singers (countertenors) sing in soprano range using the falsetto. [Edited 8/2/09 0:41am] I took voice for 20 years and while researching the response to the original question, my voice teacher said, while it is usually singing in a "higher than normal voice", it still means false voice, so when Prince sings, in the lower register at the opening of "Daddy Pop", he is actually singing falsetto. I'd like to know where your voice teacher got that impression. See, the difference between the falsetto and the modal voice is the amount of involvement from the vocal cords. In falsetto, the edges of the vocal cords vibrate, whereas in modal voice, the whole vocal cord is involved. http://upload.wikimedia.o...imated.gif When going into lower register, I don't believe the same effect is achieved. I've never heard anyone claim that the term falsetto would be applied to someone going into deeper register. The general, and widely accepted, usage of the term always refers to someone going into higher register. In any case, thanks for your input, even if we don't agree on this one.
