this is a great topic for a thread if i ever saw one

tried to start one like that a while ago but got kicked off, maybe because it was too soon after his death

but now at least we can have some logical discussion about MJ

it appears he became more concerned about what people saw in concert rather than what people were actually hearing

for the most part - the music buying public are idiots so they had no idea MJ was fooling them or did not even care

but yeah - he was more of an entertainer than a musician and he had way too much help writing songs to be considered a good song writer

sure he will go down in history as a legend but his talent unfortunately will always be questioned as well as his personal life

he was a mess - but let's blame his father

Could you please answer my question? And calm down! It's not like all the clips you've posted are from this millenium, so stuff have changed and improved. Plus I'm just saying what I have been told by ppl working with these things, ok. I'm sure they know what they are talking about. Do you happen to know anyone or are you just making your own conclusions?

Just to show how patient I can be, I'm going to dignify this silly defence with a response. You have made an ILLOGICAL deduction based on something someone once told you that you misunderstood. For instance I know that Bruce Springsteen's voice is not as good as it used to be because I've seen plenty of footage of him and it's blindingly obvious his voice is thinner and less solid. Now, when I saw him live I didn't notice this. Same goes for Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles. Her voice never really recovered from an injury she got in 1997. Compare live recordings/ TV footage from before and after and you can clearly hear it. But again, when I saw the Bangles live I didn't notice it so much. Now if I was an ILLOGICAL person, I'd say "Holy shit! The TV stations are somehow making Bruce and Susanna sound worse than they did before!" But since I'm a LOGICAL person I know that actually the TV is showing me the truth, but at the live shows the speakers were blaring out the music at such EAR SPLITTING LEVELS that you just don't notice the details so much. You're also surrounded by excited people which means you're buzzing a little too.

Just think for a second. These people were filmed plenty of times when they were younger. If TV is sabotaging them now, why wouldn't it have done the same thing then? Plus, why does it only effect them? I can't find any footage of Marvin Gaye or Gladys Knight sounding like their throats are fucked. Or Justin Timberlake or NeYo even. Again, I'd ask you to watch this clip of MJ. On the second verse his voice is cracking. Badly. No TV station can make a voice sound like that. Just use your ears and be honest with yourself.

First: You have still not answered my question.
2ndly: I didn't make it cler that I wasn't speaking about singing abilities as much as the sound in general. I must apologize for not giving you credit where credit is due, your aggressive-ish reply made it hard. Sorry. Of course, if a singer sings off key on TV he most certainly did it live. My initial post wasn't directed at you in any way, I just wanted to state that TV doesn't always give you a perfect picture of what something sounded like live. I'm allergic to the thinking that "I saw it on TV and TV shows the truth". The instruments/music may sound much louder than and almost drown the artist even though that wasn't the case. So the intention with my post was to make it clear that you can't always use TV clips as proof.

Everone posting isn't an over the top fan who can't see any flaws in the man so you don't have to respond to everyone as if that were the case. MJ certainly did sound crappy live from time to time.

Those people you mentioned didn't do dance breaks minutes before they sang that second verse. Sure he will have his good and bad days vocally, but just because his voice was cracking on the second verse, it doesn't mean anything. Choreography as hard as Michael does is very hard on your body. He opens the show with fast numbers then slows it down and sings.... it's still his body jumping and jiving minutes before he does the J5 medley, so hes allowed to be breathless is he not.

@ what age did MJ develop the 'goat vibrato'.

That sounded woeful! omg

Indeed. It's no wonder he went into semi retirement after this. Who can blame him?

I forgot all about this performance but now I remember how I and my friends watched this and just laughed with it.
Yes,because of the lypsynch and him trying 2 act bad.

Let me just say that sometimes I just couldn't stand MJ:calling himself
the King of pop(a title is something you earn, you don't call MTV saying
they have to introduce your new clip using the term KOP!),acting BAD while I liked him much better acting like he really was, people calling him a great somgwriter while Thriller(imagine if Prince wouldn't have written Purple Rain himself!!),Man in the mirror,You are not alone and others weren't written by MJ,
always trying SO hard 2 be the greatest-best selling artist by using the
most popular producer, guitarist(Eddie,Slash) of that particular time and if you wanna be KOP,well you better perform live-at least at a tv performance!!
(Prince was live at the grammy's 2 years ago,he's also 50 years old and...
I hope I haven't forgotten something lol

O yeah,I always thought Prince deserved at least the same respect MJ got,and he got it from fellow musicians/artists and press but the general public didn't always SEE that what P did/does is also phenomenal.

BUT !!! I also have some things on Prince that I don't like (release some DVD's,old-new stuff, remastered CD's and do some promo for your new cd's..man!!
and some other complaints from the past) so cool down MJ-fans !!

AND...I love a lot of MJ's music,just made my own fav-compilation,
he moves/dances great, like his voice and have such great memories of his music!
And yes,I think he has some GREAT beats/grooves :Billie Jean,In the closet,Streetwalker,Scream...beats I don't find in Prince's music.
And emotional songs like Man in the mirror(allthough he didn't write it wink ,
Stranger in Moscow and the beautiful Human Nature).

Recently I re-discoverd Lovely one,a (great)song I've heard before but I didn't know the title or album it was on ,I'm sure a lot of Mj fans will laugh with this..
being a Prince-fanatic I also would laugh if someone didn't knew I feel 4 U .

Anyway,I just wanted 2 say that I like MJ a lot all though there are
a few things I don't appreciate that much and if someone calls himself KOP he
should have sung live...whenever he could.
(I've read the comments of some fans here saying he used to sing live untill the Bad tour,I didn't know that,I've only been to the History concert-
a lot of playback on that show!)

Look at what the press and fans said about Madonna when she recently lypsynched some parts of her song on her latest tour. Press wasn't that bad because they understood with all dancing going on she didn't sing everything live, but imagine if tshe would have mimed the whole show!!
Now the papers all ready headlined : Queen of pop doesn't sing live..all of the time.
Well,I guess it's much worse for Britney, being so young and miming the whole concert wink
