Music Video Director Mark Romanek on Experiencing "Scream"
July 2009
Link

"The first record I ever owned was "The Love You Save." I was 10 years old and just getting interested in girls and the song made me feel like love and sex must be a very complex and risky proposition because it required elaborate traffic-safety metaphors. I played it over and over. When I was making the "Scream" video with Michael, I kept thinking, life is so strange, because if you had told the 10-year-old version of me that one day he'd get to meet and work with the little boy singing on that record he'd have thought you were completely insane."

"I remember getting to chat with Michael between takes of shooting "Scream." You got over his unusual appearance pretty quickly, and he just seemed like a cool, easy-to-talk-to guy. He really focused his attention on you, which is something that very charming people do. We talked about our favorite movies. I was impressed with his knowledge of foreign cinema. When it came time to perform for the cameras, the transformation from this relatively regular guy to some sort of divinely possessed super-being was really astounding, metaphysical — hard to fully comprehend. The chance to experience the phenomenon of his gift from only a few feet away gave me chills. It was the treat of a lifetime."

"Michael was one of those mega-gifted artists who obviously valued the craft of what he did very highly."

"When you bought a Michael Jackson album, you knew that it would sound pristine, that listening to it would be a rich, sonic experience. He always worked at a state-of-the-art level of craftsmanship — seemingly without compromise. Artists like that are so rare. I find them hugely inspirational. It seemed like his career was perhaps on the verge of taking a cyclical up-turn — that maybe he was about to make some really great new music. I'm sure a lot of people feel cheated by this lost possibility. I know I do."

Watching all this drama with MJ's family has made me have more respect for Priscilla Presley. If the Jackson family were the ones running the show I couldn't see them doing with MJ's empire what Priscilla was able to do with Elvis's. With known crooks like Leoonard Rowe and these other leeches hanging around the family, seems like the estate would be screwed in their hands.

I still have the original Scream Maxi single where this can be found. I'm lucky to have it still.

Naah, he's an attention seeking queen.

MJ selfish? no, one of the most charitable folk on the planet. MJ Greedy? no, wouldn't have given all that money to charity, he'd have horded it surely. Fucked up and mentally ill? no. Mike cam to terms with himself years ago, i really don't think so. At least no more than persons shooting their mouths off looking for 'drama' and trying to get a rise.

Maybe Mike was just a lonely, sad man, unable to relate to 'normal' people and 'normal' relationships. Much like a certain other demographic that maybe should be sympathetic, but he wasn't what we nickname a cigarette in the UK, though i'd imagine, he himself would sympathise with those that were unhappy with how they turned out.

Instead of shouting his mouth off with his attention-seeking, he dug statues of himself, and why not? He was such an important person to so many, proved that in death, Mike will stand the test of time, unlike some folk.

Yes I believe there are 2 versions of HIStory. Censored and uncensored.
The gold disc version (the one I have) has the uncensored lyrics.

The silver disc version is censored.

I got the gold version, the "original one".

MJ was cursing a bit on the record, that was probably the only reason I got (plus I was starting to buy albums around that time, I was only 11 so cut me some slack, lol) the album besides Mike's greatest hits on disc one. lol

Curse words on HIStory:
Shit ("This Time Around")
Ass ("D.S.")
Damn ("Earth Song")
Fuck ("Scream")

And those infamous words on "They Don't Care About Us" weren't edited... eek

This photo might be fake because why is he laying at the foot of the casket? Also, his casket was gold so i'm sure the casket in this photo would have been waaay brighter! Also, wasnt Michael buried in the jacket he wore to the 1993 Grammys?

I have it too but I think some songs on disc 1 are all scratched up, I think the same can be said of the last tracks on disc 2.

Speaking of "HIStory", I'm fond of "They Don't Care...", "Stranger in Moscow" (his last great composition to me), "Earth Song" (mainly for the gospel in the end) and, probably, "This Time Around" (well I used to...lol). And his version of "Smile", which I played on YouTube earlier today, was great. biggrin Oh and "Tabloid Junkie", "2Bad" (I could live without Shaq on it tho...) and "Little Susie".

Other than that, the other songs on the album was hit-and-miss. But I can get the critical appreciation of "Childhood" in some ways (I like the musical instrumental of it) but it's a hard song to listen to, even more so now.

Like Harlepolis said, it's one of the albums where he bared it all.
