Once, while we were taking a break, I think we were actually watching the OJ chase on TV, there was a news program talking about him being in Europe with some little boy. I was sitting next to the guy while the news is making this crap up. He just looked at me and said this is what I have to deal with.

WASHINGTON – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shut the door Thursday to a resolution honoring Michael Jackson because debate on the symbolic measure could raise "contrary views" about the pop star's life.

Lawmakers are free to use House speeches "to express their sympathy or their praise any time that they wish," said Pelosi, D-Calif. "I don't think it's necessary for us to have a resolution."

A resolution sponsored by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, cites some of the singer's charitable acts and proclaims him an American legend, musical icon and world humanitarian.

Even before Pelosi's comments, some Democrats said privately they did not support the resolution and a divisive debate would hurt House efforts to muster the votes for priorities such as health care and climate change.

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., who posted a video on YouTube calling Michael Jackson a "pervert" and a "pedophile," has pledged to do all he could to block the resolution.

Michael Jackson was acquitted in 2005 of charges that he molested a 13-year-old boy. Those allegations, and his admission that children slept in his bed at his home but nothing sexual occurred, have led some members of Congress to put distance between themselves and any formal honor for the entertainer.

"A resolution, I think, would open up to contrary views to — that are not necessary at this time to be expressed in association with a resolution whose purpose is quite different," Pelosi said at a Capitol Hill news conference where she discussed various legislative matters.

Unbowed, Jackson Lee said she will seek support from colleagues who thanked her when she introduced the measure June 26, one day after Michael Jackson died. She said honorary resolutions don't often "pass the next day."

"On this floor we elevate people and doing that we have to work to tell your story," she said after a House vote. But she would need support from Democratic leadership for the resolution to advance to the full House from the committee where it is now.

When members of the Congressional Black Caucus held a moment of silence in the House after Jackson died June 25, some lawmakers walked out of the chamber.

Jackson Lee has pledged that the resolution, now before the House Foreign Affairs Committee where she is a member, would come to the full House for debate. Such honorary measures normally move quickly from committee to the full House and pass on a voice vote.

But Jackson Lee's resolution was in trouble early. It drew only one co-sponsor, Rep. Diane Watson, D-Calif., and was not endorsed by other black caucus members.

From the stage at Jackson's memorial Tuesday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Jackson Lee hoisted a framed copy of the resolution.

Why? She got bigger problems to deal with.

Um.. yeah. As much as I love me some MJ, I'm glad that lawmakers aren't seriously wasting any time on this, considering the problems they should be focusing on.

Of course it takes about 3 seconds to pass one of these meaningless, empty resolutions.

Inside Story: The Jackson Children
July 2009

People.com

At the Michael Jackson memorial Tuesday, the world met – and was deeply moved by – the King of Pop's 11-year-old daughter, Paris, who gave an unplanned, emotional tribute to her father.

For most of her life, Paris, and her brothers Prince Michael I, 12, and Prince Michael II (a.k.a. "Blanket"), 7, were carefully shrouded from the public eye, often emerging with their father wearing colorful masks. So, who are the Jackson children?

According to family friend Gotham Chopra, the late star's eldest son Prince is a "fun kid" who "has a lot of energy." He describes Paris as "very thoughtful, very caring, and very sensitive" and quiet Blanket as "a lot like Michael."

As PEOPLE reported in 2007, by all accounts, the kids are bright, well-behaved and seemingly well-adjusted. A spokesman from the National Zoo, who accompanied the family on a visit, told PEOPLE at the time, "I was struck by how considerate and nice and normal they all were." Jackson's longtime bodyguard Miko Brando recently echoed that sentiment. "They are well-mannered, well-behaved kids," he said. "They are really level-headed."

A Normal Dad

It may seem like a contradiction, given their father's staggering fame and highly scrutinized lifestyle, but many say that as a father, Jackson was nothing but normal and loving. "There were a few times he brought his kids to work," says tour dancer Christopher "Kriyss" Grant. "You could tell by the way they looked at him that they adored him."

Adds Jackson's former publicist Raymone Bain: "They were Michael's first priority."

Looking forward, Prince, Paris and Blanket will continue to be well cared for. "The Jacksons have come together and are really loving the kids," says Chopra. "Cousins and puppies are [around in] full-force, and the kids are enjoying [it]." And no matter what the public may have thought about Jackson, adds Bain, "his children will be his greatest legacy."

jackie kennedy onassis once said something to the effect that no matter what you do in life, if you bungle raising your kids, that's what you will be remembered for.

i should look it up exactly.

on edit: she allegedly said, "if you bungle raising your children, i don't think whatever else you do well matters very much."

okay, so i was sort of off the mark, but i still think it applies here! wink

Even though the world has said goodbye to Michael Jackson, the lingering suspicion is now linking his longtime friend Elizabeth Taylor to his alleged prescription-drug overdose. Sources told The Daily Beast that Taylor influenced Jackson to take multiple prescription drugs introducing him to doctor Arnold Klein -- the same doctor whom she's since revealed prescribed her multiple medications including Dilaudid and Ativan, the first a powerful opiate that street users dub "the Bentley of heroin" and the latter a tranquilizer.
According to a source familiar with Taylor's medical history, she sought help from at least two doctors to counter her growing drug dependence, the online blog reported. At one point, another former doctor demanded she come clean on her entire prescription history and found out Taylor was using multiple prescriptions, many of which were prescribed by Klein.
The shared relationship between Jackson, Taylor and Klein continued all the way to the days before Jackson's death. Klein said he saw Jackson three days before he died on June 25 said he saw nothing to make him worry. "He danced in my office," he said. "He danced for my patients."
The founder of The National Photo Group revealed to The Daily Beast that he assigned a photographer to follow Jackson for the past few years and that Jackson was constantly spotted making two to three trips a week to Klein's Beverly Hills building, staying for anywhere from 30 minutes to five hours.
A Los Angeles Police spokesman refused to confirm or deny whether Dr. Klein was one of the five physicians reportedly the subject of their Jackson investigation. Neither Dr. Klein nor his attorney would comment.

Coming Soon: A Wave of Michael Jackson Merchandise
Some 300 Michael Jackson-designed items, from sunglasses to board games, will be available in stores starting next week By Ronald Grover

A new wave of Michael Jackson retail offerings is set to hit next week. Three weeks after the iconic singer's death, concert promoter AEG and giant Universal Music Group (VIV.PA) are expected to begin selling as many as 300 items designed by the 50-year-old singer, including knapsacks, wallets, belt buckles, sunglasses, china tea service sets, and a wide array of board and other games.

The quick turnaround was hardly intentional. Sources with knowledge of the deal say Jackson's manager, John Branca, approached Universal Music's Bravado merchandising group in June while the singer was preparing for his London comeback tour. Jackson's team and AEG, the tour's concert promoter, were eager to thwart the expected crush of pirated T-shirts and other merchandise that were already beginning to flood the market. Bravado Chief Executive Tom Bennett signed the deal and met in Los Angeles with Jackson in June, according to sources with knowledge of the deal, and reviewed designs that Jackson had created for many of the products.

Bravado is a small but growing part of Universal Music's $6.4 billion empire; last year it generated nearly $240 million in sales, nearly a threefold increase over 2007. The unit sells merchandise related to UMG stars such as Kanye West, Elton John, and Guns N' Roses. At the time of his death, Jackson did not have a record label, although his most recent albums had been distributed by UMG rival Sony Music (SNE). Universal's Motown label controls the rights to some of Jackson's earlier music, as well as music by the Jackson Five.

Huge Market Potential
The new line of Michael Jackson merchandise will be sold through a wide array of retailers, including Target (TGT), JC Penney (JCP), Hot Topic (HOTT), and other store chains that often work with UMG's music distribution network. The market could be huge. Sales of Jackson's music skyrocketed after his death, and the July 7 memorial was seen by huge audiences on TV and on the Web. The market for deceased icons has always been huge. Elvis Presley merchandise is estimated to generate more than $40 million in revenue a year three decades after his death.

The Jackson merchandise could also pick up steam with the widely expected release sometime in the coming months of new songs that Jackson recorded but had kept under wraps and was expected to release soon after his London tour began.

Um, guess I won't get in a rush to pick a T-shirt from the tour site....
