James Brown, Michael Jackson and Prince on stage

I don't know if you've guys seen this but it's a clip of a James Brown concert where Michael Jackson and Prince get on the stage. Check it out, it's from the early 80s.

[Prince Youtube snip - luv4u]

One question, what the hell was up with Prince's performance?

It would've been interesting having MJ and Prince on the stage at the same time.

Short version:

- James Brown show in 1983, with both Prince and MJ in attendance
- JB spots MJ and gets him on stage, MJ does his little dance
- MJ tells JB that Prince is also in the audience
- JB calls Prince
- Prince doesn't really want to do it because he had been sitting backstage with Brown's band members getting high (according to the bandmembers)
- Prince gives in to public pressure
- Prince makes a fool out of himself
- JB is kind enough to hand Prince his jacket that he left behind while Prince tears down a stage light on the way out

biggrin

And there is goes again.

No proof possible.
Various members of the James Brown band confirmed this years later, and the story always matched. But nobody filmed it or took pictures of it. it was before the Twitter/Youtube/digicam era, ya know? wink
Believe it - or don't. Your choice. biggrin

You know, i don't.

Stagefright, nerves, unfamiliar guitar, not his crowd. Always thought those four reasons are much more likely.

But still, lock

That's your explanation. I have no doubt to not believe the musicians, because after all these years, their story always matched. Prince is human, you know. He played around with drugs, like anyone else in the biz.

You know I never got what was wrong with Prince's performance. If you watch the Revolution Live video from a couple of years later he does some pretty weird stuff in it also.

I think any "weirdness" in his performance can be attributed to the spontaneous nature of the occasion. To this day Prince is much more comfortable in situations where he is the one in control. It does not strike me as the least bit odd that he would look uncomfortable on stage with James Brown's band.

I would also say that M.J.'s performance was much briefer than Prince's.

He's even playing around with them now. You know, the Lotusflower album has some organic sound which most prolly comes from the pain medics he's taking...

I have this video. Prince does look like he is high. I wouldn't be surprised if it was ever revealed that Prince took drugs for most of the 80s. His Lovesexy album sounds like someone high as hell.

It was great to see Prince fucked up rather than being a straight laced little goodie two shoes "Look at me I'm Sandra Dee" type person that doesn't even drink or smoke. Prince during his bad ass years. lol

I have no idea if Prince was high or not but to me it seems unlikely. I just think that he was much too driven to succeed with his music and that after seeing what drugs did to someone like Sly Stone I think Prince was pretty determined to avoid them. Having said that of course it is possible that I am wrong and Prince was indulging on that particular night.

What quotes? Do you think I wrote that shit down? lol
I don't know how many times I've heard that story. From various band members. It cracks them up every time.

I'm not pushing you to believe it. If you don't, and you want to continue to believe that Prince never did drugs, then go ahead. I won't stop you from day dreaming. lol

I would willingly believe any story that is actually backed up with some evidence. I know it's old fashioned of me, but I'm funny like that.

Strange how not a single one of Prince's band members or girlfriends have ever said anything about him taking drugs, but (according to you) JB's musicians got a front row seat to him shoving coke up his nose. Yep, that's a REALLY CREDIBLE story you're telling there. thumbs up!

You are aware that Prince's former band members had to sign confidentiality agreements, right? Prince had no such agreements with James Brown's musicians.
Besides, it's not like Brown's musicians went public with what they shared with Prince. They share this story with people they know.

I could give you specific names of these musicians, but this is a public message board, and they did not only see Prince do drugs, they did it with him. I won't put them in the position to make their names public. I've probably already said more than I should have. lol

In the end, it's up to you to believe it or to not believe it. But are you honestly trying to tell me that you believe Prince never touched drugs? Also, if you have ever been around people using this particular drug, one look at the footage may not be proof alone, but certainly strongly supports the experiences of Brown's musicians.

Lol, its hilarious when this gets brought up.

Prince was so fucked up and nervous. He was literally dying on that stage. One of the greatest moments in music, no doubt, but one of the worst showings for the midget. However, it was kinda shady what MJ, R.I.P. did. He invited Prince on stage for a reason... he probably saw Prince snort a line in the bathroom, so what does he do? Tell James Brown to bring Prince on stage for a little bit of embarrassment.

That's exactly what the cats in J.B.'s band believe happened. Of course there is no proof for this. biggrin
