lol you ain't lying!

It boggles the mind how ANYONE with properly functioning ears could enjoy some of that stuff, but even moreso an adult. I don't get it. I started a thread not too long ago asking about the similar tastes between the two groups and got shot down with the quickness for "stereotyping" and obviously not knowing anything about young gay men. lol

what do 23 yo gay boys listen? I have the feeling Shitney became a gay idol for a younger generation. Like the mother of Liza Minelli was fo a certain generation, Diana Ross, Barbra and Madonna.

The same thing 13 year old girls listen to.

My 21 year old gay male roommate plays the same music his 12 year old sister played when she came out here to visit. confused Lots and lots and lots of Britney, Beyonce, Pussycat Dolls, and sounds of that variety.

Gay clubs even in this town, even bear bars that supposedly target an older crowd, all play the same crap.

I never used to want to go to the gay bars with friends when I lived in Atlanta because most of the time, the music they play is just un-fucking-listenable. lol

I used to love to go out, but I don't like the straight clubs and bars out here, and the music in the gay establishments makes my ears bleed.

Backstreet Boys on it's own is quite gay enough, if you know where they got their name from.

I don't get the whole Disney phenomena for teenagers. It reminds me of the stuff I'd be suckered into when I was EIGHT. EIGHT YEARS OLD! By the time you're 13 you're usually wanting to grow up a bit. When you're 13, you wish you were 16-18. I was obsessed with Prince at 13 and finding all the dirtiest songs I could.

I wasn't running after... oh shit, in the early to mid 90s there wasn't really anything like these Disney stars, even the boy bands weren't too clean cut either. Maybe a couple of R&B girl groups like Eternal were the most parent-friendly things I was listening to at 13, but they were girls in their early 20s - i.e. what 13 year olds look up to and aspire to be. I wouldn't be listening to a 15 year old girl like Miley Cyrus because it's far too close an age gap. Especially for girls, it's just nature to want to look up to someone older than identify with someone your own age.

I'm the same age as Britney and Billie Piper - when they first came out they were playing to 10 year olds, not me.

Ugh, hardly any teens actually like Soulja Boy, most just wanted to learn the dance.

Trust me, the majority despise him.

The cleanness of this new crop is mostly what weirds me out. Those boybands and girlgroups of ten years ago regularly talked and sang about fucking, even if they didn't use that actual word. The Jonas Brothers sing about how hard modesty is to find in a girl. confused

Well of course not. I almost laughed out loud when I heard about their saving themselves, or whatever chastity PR nonsense that was.

But the shift in teen idol image is weird. When I was 13, I was getting encouragement from all corners of the pop world to go out and find a pretty body to have fun with. Today's 13 year olds are having Disney tell them to wait 'til the wedding night. hmm

Where's this generation's Lay Down Beside Me? sad

I'm guessing here but there's definitely been a big rebellion against that kind of "skank" attitude amongst younger people. I don't know why and I don't know what brought it on but teens are definitely waiting til they're older before they start dating/having sex.

When emo/goth was popular again amongst teens in 2006-2007, there was a movement called 'straight edge' where if you say "I'm straight edge", it means you don't drink, smoke or have sex and you believe in God...while listening to Marilyn Manson falloff

I thought it was ridiculous and most of my friends grew out of it by 17 or 18 but I think it's still alive and well amongst the 12-16 age group.

So I guess Disney is cashing in on this movement.

I suppose it's not THAT bad a movement but it's when they start judging or looking down on those who don't do it that gets to me.

I wouldn't go dragging goth into this mess, but emo has definitely had a weird effect on things. Around here though "straight edge" usually doesn't include references to God, but the rest is about the same.

There are worse things that telling kids to wait 'til they're ready for sex, for sure. But a lot of this Disney crowd seem to be of a more judgmental bent, or at least the ones I've been exposed to.

Still though, half the fun in the pop music I grew up with was just how naughty -and occasionally outright dirty -it could be.

I just said "goth" in case you didn't know what emo was lol Goths can be cool, emo's are just pathetic attention seekers.

Same with me with pop, I grew up with Britney lol It was hilarious watching all the parents go bonkers each time a video came out. Hell, Fox News is STILL going on about her lol

Well, you know how I feel about Britney, and I know how you feel about BSB, but I know exactly what you mean. lol

Britney may have claimed to be a virgin but everyone knew it was bull and her whole image even back then was sort of a stripper Lolita thing. Quite the contrast to an act like Hilary Duff. eek

I remember when my young self figured out exactly what the Spice Girls meant when they sang 2 Become 1, or exactly why boybands are so often posed in photoshoots only half-dressed. is feeling nostalgic mushy

I do think she was a virgin originally, but by the time Slave 4 U came out it was pretty obvious why she wanted to "grow up" image wise.

Hilary's early 20s now and trying to sex up her image rolleyes She played a hooker/stripper in some recent film.
