bit rough at the start, but overall great performance; far better than the last time she sang it on the x-factor.

I thought it was lazy for her to do such an old song. It sounded so 90's pop crap. If she was the singer/songwriter she claims all the time she would have written something fresh that was inspired by Obama. Now to be fair Beyonce did do an even older song, but, it was a classic and fit the moment. Hero, Barack is not a Hero... biggrin

pffft beyonce is incapable of writing songs (wait, she doesnt write any of her songs, period) that will stand that test of time. she just doesnt possess that knack and maturity for penchant lyricism. for someone to come out so seriously and defend "i am" as a statement and to parade around saying how much time she put into the project, the product itself left a lot to be desired and was laughable at best. not only was it random but it alienated a lot of her fans for such little nothingness - what about her claims for giving back to the fans, whatever happened to that? for someone with so much talent, she is so predictable and mediocre, afraid of letting loose or being vulnerable or at fault. she will be looked back upon history unkindly.

lazy? hero is a difficult song even by mariah's standards. ahahaha most artists would cringe at doing something so authentic, so well known, so well-sung within their catalogue. pleasssse. mariah always bounces back from attacks on her voice or her songs. didnt u listen to the video, "this for everyone out there with a dream and of course..." its a dedication more than anything [to the president], the hero is in all us, its in you and you and you. beyonce merely kissed ass, mariah was class all the way.

Take a breather. I dont think anyone is saying beyonce is better than mariah. The only thing is as of NOW, beyonce can pull off better performances, Even with beyonce's mediocre voice she can play it off, unlike mariah who is now even more insecure and when she doesn't hit the notes its so obvious. BUT we all know mariah can sing better. Im sorry to say this but there are singers out there who would have done a better job singing that song than the way mariah did that night, and that is a fact.

Mariah doesn't have any more class than beyonce, the difference is beyonce does not know how to hide her "ghetto fabulous" ways, and beyonce is more in your face with her ego. But mariah is just as self-absorbed and ghetto as beyonce. But atleast she really has or had real talent that NO one can deny.

Actually, I liked this performance.

I love me some Mariah but I'm the first to admit Mariah can not bring it live like she used to in the early 90's. However, I'm glad she decided to perform the song live and not lip-synch like she has been doing often over the past several years.

I don't understand what people are complaining about as far as the song choice. Singing a dumb song like "Touch My Body" would have been tasteless and inappropriate. Mimi's song choice was PERFECT because Obama is a Hero and the lyrics totally described him!

i think the problem maybe, mariah keeps singing that song at every "special event" and she keeps rededicating to people. I mean how many times are you going to dedicate that to people??? It would be nice if you are going to dedicate a song that is only to a particular person.

dont tell me to relax. get the fuck out of my thread. comparing beyonce and mariah's performance was purely for analytical purposes only since some posters chose to bring it up for whatever reason. it a shame that you fail to mention any artist that could have "done a better job singing the song". don't waste my time with childish things. you can't have it both ways.

Your whole post is just doesn't even really make sense.

lol Again I say, take a breather. Its not that serious. these are celebs we will never meet and we will never receive a pay check from. I understand you are probably annoyed that people compared beyonce to mariah. I sometimes get annoyed to with stuff on this board too. But its not that serious enough to use profanity.

Oh and i can be all up in this thread if i want razz

I did NOT say any "artist" because i was speaking about everyday people who are NOT famous but can sing. I have heard people sing that song before and they sound better than mariah's performance that night. But i also will say at mariah's peak no one could have touched that song but her.

^you truly have no comprehension skills at all. once again you fail to mention any artist that could have sung this song period. you can't have it both ways. try again, you're embarassing yourself. why would i be annoyed at beyonce being compared to mariah? they are not even in the same universe? try phrasing your argument next time with some substance, rather contradicting yourself, i.e. no one could have touched the song but her. it kinda cancels out anything you were trying to make.

Yeah, that night I could imagine another singer doing it more justice...Mariah was all over the place and not in key alot of the time...singers? Mary J, Glady's Night, Chaka, I would even say Beyonce would have pulled it off. What totalalisa is saying is that Mariah seems to be embarassed when she does have a bad per4mance, where Beyonce can fall flat on her face on stage and keep the party movin and say 'hey I did that'...but dont tell Mariah she didnt sing that song that great...LORD NO....that's all she got is her voice live...she cant do anything else that well. ALbeit I have ran to Florida to see this woman live and have all her albums but even a true fan can admit that.

Emotionless performance. I LOVE that song and she completely sung all the melody out of it. It was a perfect song choice, but she just ruined it imo disbelief

I agree. However the current popular singer I think would have the best live vocal for that song today is Jennifer Hudson. Beyonce is my next choice, then maybe Jordin Sparks or Mary J.

The reason why i did NOT list any artist because I WAS NOT TALKING ABOUT OTHER CELEBRITIES. i SAID I was talking about everyday people who can sing. There is a girl in my class who could have sung that song better than mariah that night.

you got ISSUES... lol lol lol i SAID during mariah's peak, no one could have touched that song. Her peak was 1997. Mariah is NOT AT HER PEAK, she is at her lowest right now 2009.

i just dont trust her anymore. i know she lipsynchs on the big notes and has probably since the butterfly tour. but she kicked that into high gear during charmbracelet. lipsynching of the bridges! grrr. so even when it seems like she's killin it, i'm wary of being impressed cuz theres a 90% chance it's tape.

pffttt do you always get personal when you can't handle the conversation.believe me the feeling is mutual. who said anything about celebrities? i was merely asking about artists? the fact of tthe matter is that no one that night would have sung the song apart from mariah. neither mary and neither keyshia cole. you are merely hating for no reason. once again i reiterate that you can't have it both ways. do you sing? do you actually know what its like to perform at such a prestigious event? were you there that night? there were so many variables that night and the only claim to fame you could have come up with is that no one could have touched the song at her peak? wtf? well duh that shit was obvious. so why wouldnt it apply to today's events - doesnt it make sense that the one who wrote and performed the song at her peak be the one to ultimately sing it at such an event? you are merely scrambling for arguments. don't embarass yourself any further. you are probably the people that criticise her lack of animation and vocal agility and yet pine for the old mariah to suddenly reappear to save your vanity. when are you going to get over the fact that people change and in doing so their interpretation of songs change. you add nothing new to the conversation but your inept music knowledge and level of insecurity.

you have a girl in your class that could have sung the song? wow whoopity doo you must feel so special.

the fact of that matter is that she is at her peak whether you choose to acknowledge it or not. it might not be vocally or melodically but musically she is at her peak. in this fickle music environment, anyone who could hope for an 11th album is no fly on the wall. accept the fact that her place is sketched in the echelons of music and will forever remain that way, regardless.

exactly, you have no idea at all. Zero. You oversimplified something so technical into something so secondary. stop wasting my time. once again you seem to take one thing and run with it. Who cares what your tidy definition of success is or your commentary on the state of music today? Your views are formed on half-assed listens, innuendoes, hype and gossip.

You major in the obvious because you do not have a rebuttal strong enough to prop up against up mine. Let me educate you. Mariah has been plagued with criticisms of her voice from mindless critics from her inception as a phenomenon for decades: for over-singing, for over stylising, for underperforming, for her melismatic singing style which most artists utilised back then, on towards her whispery and hip hop flavoured stylizations - these criticisms permeate her pre and post-Butterfly days. Mariah understands her voice more so than any other person and will use it accordingly to fit a song, add strength or nuance to it. There’s more to it than just raw power and belting out for the sake of belting out. Rather her vocals have not diminished as you and many have suggested, rather you do not understand the subtleties which are within her vocal range. Mariah is a classically trained artist utilising a contemporary sound.

The claims of disconnectedness are trivial. Once again you fall short. Your comments are pointless. Just because you have two ears doesnt mean anything. For the record, hating is being ignorant of the facts and their legitimacy. If you can’t commit, i suggest you bow out immediately. Whatever you do, don’t make a comeback.
