Well, it's more like she took the title Sexuality and used the instrumentation from Controversy instead.
Either way, sounds hot!

well its pure Prince, from the keyboard progression to the linn drum, Rihanna obviously is going to try to SEX UP her image at this point "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Either way, sounds hot! That's what I hear too. I was just listening to "Controversy" last night. [Edited 10/11/08 10:24am]

Im not caring too much about the song, just getting an idea how she is gonna be for that video, i think we can all expect alot of "double standard" talk "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Pretty cool. I love it...Prince could have made this better in his hey day. Sounds like a Andre Cymone cut. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

For the first time im anxious for something from her, because its quite a bit more interesting. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Lesson one: if you are going to record analog synths using saw waveforms and placing them on top of the mix, record them onto tape (not direct to digital) or mike up an amplifier (preferably. Otherwise they'll end up sounding like typical techno shit if you listen a bit more closely.
Otherwise, the track has potential, moi thinks.

I actually like it. It's got potential from just that snippet...and it does remind me of "Controversy". The video is definitely going to be sexed up, but after seeing the video to "Disturbia", I'm sure it can be sexed up and possibly interesting. Prince Rogers Nelson

Damn, is Prince getting paid for this? If VainAndy doesn't like this, then he'll never like anything this century. Wonder what Prince'll make of this. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

I wonder if its done on purpose because rihanna was mistaken for Prince at a party "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Which is what i have said of Rihanna before "impress me with something a little different" and this sounds like its it. As for sexing it up, i think given the title and some of the lyrics you kind of get the idea that Rihanna is looking for "sex appeal" kind of coverage that has eluded her so far. I wonder how long it will be before someone comes into this thread and says the the song sounds nothing like anything Prince has ever recorded...that Prince wasn't the only artist to use the Linn Drums and that everyone is this thread is a Purple Koolaid Drinker.

I think that there's more untapped potential in Prince's back catalog than any living soul. Not just in sampling, but covers and using his music in film.
But the real question remains, will Prince sue everyone out of their inspiration or will he learn to just turn the other cheek? == dfgsfdgsfdgsd == [Edited 10/12/08 2:10am]

Strangely even the more anti-jw ones are allowed to be covered. My beloved Robyn covered recently Jack U Off as one of her b-sides

I don't think anyone is under any legal obligation for cover songs (if they don't change the lyrics beyond minor issues such as gender), but some artists feel a moral obligation. One thing I remain unconvinced about is that Prince totally understands that all inspiration is flattering to some degree, even where it's judged to create tepidity or a even a monstrosity. The only thing I can see blocking is hate speech, but even there it's probably not worth shining the light on such depravity. Of course the problem is that some strongly object to almost everything that offers an alternate view, thus the litigious society in which we live. -- Weird Al Clarification -- [Edited 10/12/08 2:42am]

It's weird he's apparently all about real music etc etc but he's okay with Rihanna sampling his stuff (aka taking credit amongst younger audiences for something he originally came up with).
I love Rihanna but I'm aware of how artificial she is. I'll never understand Prince

That sounds very plausible. And when it comes to sampling, he clearly has the legal control to deny anything. I would argue that he's wasting his energy trying to control so much. But he obviously sees his music as his children and, even though he seems to have a good sense of humor, doesn't seem to when it comes to his music. And on a side note, I think that this song has massive potential (at least judging by this 105-second clip). She's a pretty, young vessel and this song surely sounds like a brilliant twisting of "Controversy" over top of the "Sexuality" concept.
