After some trepidation, I finally purchased Janet's Discipline and...

...it's not too bad actually. I initially downloaded a few tracks when the album was released and was quite underwhelmed so it was the first Janet album I didn't buy on release. But I picked it up the other day and it's better than I thought it'd be. Janet's work with Rodney Jerkins is definately stronger than her brothers.

Although I've found that since she's stopped using Jam & Lewis as her main producers her albums have been very inconsistant. Both Discipline and 20YO have some excellent tracks but are padded out with some very bland filler so when you hear these albums on a first listen you're left feeling a bit cheated.

Can't B Good is an excellent mid-tempo ballad worthy of her first four albums. Her vocal delivery and the melody is sublime.

If you can get past the hilarious lyrics of the title track ("Daddy I've mis-behaved, I've been very bad") there's a gorgeous melody to be found.

And the uptempos are definately stronger than anything from Damito Jo or 20YO. Rock With U is a great dance-infused club track which could've been a big hit if Janet still had any pulling power on the European front. 2nite is a decent pop track which reminded me a little of Together Again (interesting to see that Taj Jackson helped write the track) and Rollercoaster is pretty cool also.

Whilst the quality control isn't what it once was, Janet is still making good pop/R&B records, and deserves to be having hits over the likes of Rhianna and Chris Brown. I hope her next venture gives her more success...

I love the album.

I just re-read the credits to check out the Taj Jackson thing you mentioned as I'm a fan of 3T.....and to my surprise, I also noticed that none other than Ernie Isley played guitar on a few tracks on this album!!! Who knew?!

It's a great album!

Her best since The Velvet Rope imo.

Why didn't she write anything on this album?

probably cause of the label controlling her, that bothered me too at first, but she needed a fresh change and it worked to her advantage, I love all the songs on it, even though Curtains had to grow on me.

It may be a guilty pleasure, but I really love Greatest X. It'd be a great Christmas single.

Although it's a little...

The other day I was listening to it on my iPod when I was waiting for a bus, and I was stood next to this gang of six teenage yobs and I thought "they'd so beat me up if they could hear what I was listening to right now".
