Raphael Saadiq - The Way I See It If this is not a contender for traditional R&B album of the year (alongside Al's Lay It Down) then I'll have to go around and start blowing up some shit. This is the album that 'Instant Vintage' should've been... [and I love that album, but the material on The Way I See It deserves the better title of "Instant Vintage"]
... Whew.... That is all.

It comes out Tuesday. I'm urging folks to take the day off (if possible) sit back and enjoy this joint.

Haha, ain't no album worth taking the day off to listen to, unless, of course, Monk, Hendrix, Elvin Jones, Paul Chambers and Coltrane are all suddenly resurrected and record an album together - but I will surely cop this.
When Saadiq is on, he's fucken on.

I'm at his myspace page...he's such a stylist.
Judging from the cuts on his page, it's highly unoriginal, but godammit, it sounds good.

Judging from the cuts on his page, it's highly unoriginal, but godammit, it sounds good. I swear by Saadiq as a producer, but lyrically and musically I know he's never been the king of originality. But that dude knows the art of creating a feel good groove. I was just saying on another message board that Saadiq has always been on a 60s retro kick and he's always worn his Bay Area/Curtis Mayfield Impressionisms on his sleeve. So, personally, I don't think this one should be viewed as some sort of gimmick. Unlike his previous solo joints, I can't find one skippable track on it.

and as... Ray Ray shoulda been the artwork I dig the current artwork. It pretty much prepares you for what you about to hear. Ray Ray gives off more of a 70s vibe, IMO. [Edited 9/13/08 20:48pm]

Ray Ray and Instant Vintage were yawn-able and yawn inducing.
But I agree - Saadiq has always been unapologetic stylist and a record producer worthy of that thang they hand out in Oslo every year for Peace and shit. Oh Girl...wow...suddenly shuttled back to 1959 and I'm driving home after dropping my high school sweetheart off at her crib. My old man's gonna love this record.

They could could've collaborated in another way on some other shit. That one kinda pisses me off. However, I still endorse this album [Edited 9/13/08 21:00pm]

the other night did anybody beside me catch it? I've been searching Youtube/Dailymotion like crazy when you mentioned it in Luvland what show, puddin'? And yes, I've been saying he should've called this album "Ode 2 Mr.Mayfield" since the whole thing sounds like a Curtis/Impressions tribute album as opposed to a "Raphael Saadiq" album. I hate it when artists put their influences TOO MUCH on display, it kills the originality. I like the album though def a feel-good joint and I can't fault anybody for bringin' musicianship to the table(as opposed to the heavy use of computers instead of instruments). And for those who think this album is better than Instant Vintage and that the latter is boring I beg to differ, dahlings! @ OPH,,,,that shit is my joy! [Edited 9/14/08 10:36am]

@ OPH,,,,that shit is my joy! co-sign it's Ray Ray that is the snoozefest I meant it gets better towards the end but Instant Vintage is great I mean there's stuff I could do without... but it's still a great piece of work "OPH"... yes... I've worn that interlude into the ground 57 feet deep because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

It is a very good album. I hope he gets a nod for album of the year at the Grammy Awards (but I know he won't). **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I just saw Ray live in DC 2wks ago. the tunes are solid. i saw him live when "Ray Ray" came out, he did the strong tunes(title cut, chic vibe, rifle love, help the grown folks). i figured after listening to the Joss Stone project that his next solo offereing would sound like this. he captures the vibe well. It's getting some worthy praises. Plus the basslines.....u can tell he got his James Jamerson vibe on w/this release.

Ray Ray wasn't bad, but there weren't any real standouts like on the former. From what I've heard so far of the new album, I may like it the most of all three studio albums. I saw him live last month here in NYC and the show was great, but I don't think he did any songs from Ray Ray.
