Meloh9 said: vainandy said: The reason that Prince has fans that are "musically sophisticated" is because Prince himself never disappeared and continues to make albums that contain real music on them. Yeah, he sells out from time to time with a few bullshit shit hop sounding tracks like "Incense and Candles" or "Mr. Goodnight", but he still puts some actual jams on the album also like "Chelsae Rodgers", "Love", or "Lolita".
All the rest of the artists of Prince's heyday have either retired or sold out completely to the shit hop sound. Since Prince never left, he's been the only outlet for people to find good music without having to "search and look for it" (oh that makes me sick when I hear people use that cop out). Naturally, his fans that have good taste are going to discuss other good artists too. If he'd stop making sellout tracks like "Incense and Candles" and "Mr. Goodnight", a lot of those fans with current tastes would leave. Of course, Prince never totally wanted to do completely right. Hell, just look at the change after "Purple Rain". have you ever created a post or replied to a topic without the word "shithop" in it It just comes natural because it's presence is everywhere from background music in TV commercials to shit hop slang and words in all the talk shows. It's a damn epidemic. Andy is a four letter word.

I used to but it was very cliquish over there and I don't have patience for that. Obviously, we all have something in common that's why we're there. I still check the threads tho. Oh I guess I end up posting here more often than the Prince related pages, at least lately. I AM a Prince fan though!! Used to post more at the NPG board years ago. Not sure why that is, I guess I'm in a phase where I'm not jamming the Prince as often as before. It comes & goes. I like the general music chat here cuz it's coming from a lot of different points of view than the other rock-centric boards I post on.

I'm 100% positive that someone has already made this point, but I'm not going to read through the entire thread to verify.
The reason that certain, very popular (or once popular) artists get discussed ad nauseum on here is the same reason those some artists sell (or sold) a lot of records. They have a lot of fans, they appeal to a broad base, they do a lot to keep themselves in the public eye. The reasons you see a lot of people discussing these artists at length are the same reasons you see them all over the media, tabloids, charts, etc. Success perpetuates itself. Why would anyone think there would be more and more frequent discussion of artists like Miles Davis, Zapp, Chaka, etc. here than anywhere else in the world? This IS a website dedicated to a man who is first and foremost a pop star and pop artist and has more in common with MJ, Madonna, Mariah, Janet, etc. Or at least those are the qualities that attracted the majority of his fans.

While i agree that Prince is a pop star, I have appreciation for him for the fact he can play an instrument and write his own songs, good songs, great songs. I don't put him anywhere near those other people and I don't own any of their music aside from a few tracks. I can readily admit to being a music snob and most of the people discussed ad mauseum in this forum do nothing for me.The reason that certain, very popular (or once popular) artists get discussed ad nauseum on here is the same reason those some artists sell (or sold) a lot of records. I'm just explaining why there are more and longer threads about those artists. The have more fans, they put out more product, they keep themselves in the public eye. Same reason you hear more about them in the mainstream media is why you hear more about them here. They're common ground, like Prince, for more people than, say, Tricky or Miles.

Really? Is there a reason then why Prince: Music & More is littered with photo threads, "What's Princes favorite *INSERT SOMETHING COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT HERE*?" threads,"CAN I PLEASSSS BES PRONCES GOORLFREIND??!1!1" and other types of bullshit threads?
