There are many people in this forum that aren't Prince fans...that's not to say that that has anything to do with the quality of threads here.

Nothing to do with musical sophistication, my friend, just cold, hard gossip. You will notice that veeery few of the Michael/Madonna/Janet threads have anything at all to do with music, and that thread about Aretha attacking Beyonce went on for quite some time.

So yeah, as far as this board is concerned gossip > music, it seems. Human nature, ya know? smile

I have tried starting threads on a vaiety of artists (Sun-Ra among them) back in the day, but the response was so low, that it was embarrassing.

Instead, the attention getting threads of "MJ this" or "Madonna that" swamp the board. You need the idle chatter to keep things light. A board full of audiophiles would be boring, but intelligent discussion can't hurt either .

Prince.org is not really an ideal representation of musical tastes though. I feel confident tons of Prince fans have good tastes, but they may not post

I think the majority of people in this forum have wide-ranging and eclectic tastes, but the few people on here who are absolutely wild about the whole Madonna/Janet/Mariah scene are extremely zealous and vocal and think we need new threads on them on a daily basis.

And let's face it, even with all the dance diva obsessions around here, it could be even worse. We could be inundated with dozens of threads a day about Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. Count your blessings. lol

good grief

Madonna is one of my favorite artists, but even I think there are too many Madonna threads here lol Discussing her upcoming tour is fine, but I don't see why some folks like to discuss everything she does (although I admit, the A-Rod gossip was fun for a minute, lol).

The overabundance of MJ/Madonna/Janet threads used to bother me but it doesn't so much anymore. People will talk about what they want to talk about, and I find that a lot of times when somebody doesn't like the content of this forum, it's because the topics they want to discuss or bring up nosedive. lol It happens to me all the time. shrug I don't visit the GD forum for the same reason; there's nothing there for me, and it's a different crowd that doesn't respond to topics I bring up. Not a big deal. I just don't frequent it because of that.

Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.

The reason that Prince has fans that are "musically sophisticated" is because Prince himself never disappeared and continues to make albums that contain real music on them. Yeah, he sells out from time to time with a few bullshit shit hop sounding tracks like "Incense and Candles" or "Mr. Goodnight", but he still puts some actual jams on the album also like "Chelsae Rodgers", "Love", or "Lolita".

All the rest of the artists of Prince's heyday have either retired or sold out completely to the shit hop sound. Since Prince never left, he's been the only outlet for people to find good music without having to "search and look for it" (oh that makes me sick when I hear people use that cop out). Naturally, his fans that have good taste are going to discuss other good artists too. If he'd stop making sellout tracks like "Incense and Candles" and "Mr. Goodnight", a lot of those fans with current tastes would leave. Of course, Prince never totally wanted to do completely right. Hell, just look at the change after "Purple Rain". evillol

I don’t think this forum is an accurate reflection of our total musical tastes. I like, listen to and own music by ‘sophisticated artists’ but I don’t find a whole lot to say about them. I’ve started threads on a few and watched them drop. Maybe it’s the musician, maybe it’s me. shrug Whatever the case, I keep it moving.

I think the MJ/JJ/Madge/MC threads get filled quickly because love em or hate em, everyone has an opinion or knows something about them even if it’s just in passing. Stuff is constantly reported on them even if the majority of it is crap.

Does anyone want to see the kids of ‘sophisticated artists’ or care who they’re currently sleeping with? Probably not or certainly not to the extent of starting a thread and posting ad nauseam.

The Michael/Madonna/Janet threads do seem to overwhelm this board.

Without question but they are also threads that people really seem to get wrapped up in and it make the threads entertaining. I think that's part of why they are so popular in this section. I ALWAYS get amused and amazed when I read other orgers views on those 3 people, Mariah Carey or some other artist whose thread always gets 100 or more replies.

I think this thread needs to be divided up into 2 sections. Generation X and Generation Y. Gen X are the ones who tend to be musically sophisticated whereas Gen Y has grown up on crap music and tend not to know any better.

Although there are some veterans up in the janet, madonna and MJ threads lol
