French music appreciation thread (old/new)

Any French lovers in here???

I started to look up some old French songs and I truly believe that French music is highly underrated.

If I look at my friends, no one likes French music and to be exact they don't know anyone either. It also doesn't get any airplay here though they've had/have some pretty good artists/music. What I find cool is that if you're in France, they play their own music most of the time.

Do any of you guys know the following songs, like them, or not. Does anyone outside Europe even know any French artists? Maybe some Canadians?

They all have something naughty, sexy, not afraid to show themselves and that typical French popsound, I love it, I love France. I haven't heard French songs for a long time.

Please share your favorite French song(s) with me.
Let me hear what's hot at this moment and what you thought was hot years ago.

These are the ones I could think of myself at this moment, I surely missed a few:

Les Rita Mitsouko - Y'a d'la haine (also: Andy, Marcia Baila, Le petit train etc)
http://nl.youtube.com/wat...gx3AZCi0lw

Desireless - Voyage voyage
http://nl.youtube.com/wat...PDmZnG8KsM

Guesch Patti - Etienne
http://nl.youtube.com/wat...bea868xDW0

Mylene Farmer - L'amour n'est rien (Sans contrefaçon, Desenchantee etc)
http://nl.youtube.com/wat...re=related

Alizee - Lolita
http://nl.youtube.com/wat...DwKPGUIVME

Patricia Kaas - Il me dit que je suis belle
http://nl.youtube.com/wat...H9LhQqtfr4

Air - Mer du Japon
http://nl.youtube.com/wat...HtJCXurVxs

Axel Red - Naive
http://nl.youtube.com/wat...8C2o_zNqao

Edit: How could I forget her:
France Gall - Ella ella
http://nl.youtube.com/wat...QkB-WWzsbg

Please share your thoughts with me.

hmmm I've got this feeling this thread will die a lonely death lol

Stephan Pompougnac - Sous de Soleil (here's a clip with this song..I love his this song). I believe he is a DJ in France(not sure) My son is a fan of his music, that's how I found out about him. I understand he is part of hotel costas - which includes various artists or something like that.

That is indeed a nice song with Spanish influences.

Are you American?
Besides French/Canadian singers do they broadcast any French musicians in the US?

When it comes to French music , I'm "old school" that is stuck in the 80s : Michel Berger , France Gall's husband, a brilliant composer and musician who wrote for so many other artists ( he died in his early 40s), Jean Jacques Goldman( also brilliant musician) and Francis Cabrel who has the most beautiful ballads.I loved the band ' Gold" when I was a teenager .

Never heard of them. I looked up Jean Jacques Goldman, his songs sound very at ease, nice to hear.
It's such a waste that mostly British and American music gets played here, that's fine because I like that the most but if something isn't given a chance you can never enjoy it and there are so many French artists.

I'm pretty old school too.
Jean-Michel Jarre - Oxygene IV Penguins
http://nl.youtube.com/wat...4oSXmnkPUU

A classic that even the rest of the world must know:

Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg - Je T'aime Moi Non Plus
http://nl.youtube.com/wat...u660EWj03Y

Vanessa Paradis - Joe le taxi
http://nl.youtube.com/wat...rqpod29LzQ

Patrick Bruel and Julien Clerc have nice songs, I even like some of Charles Aznavour.

Sash had a hit with encore une fois, not really my taste. Cheb Khaled with Aisha.

And I'm trying to recall a "recent" pop song, about 2-3 years ago. Got a lot of airplay on MTV. A girl driving in a sportscar somewhere along the coast at the Cote D'azur and in the end she's in a speedboat and a guy is tied up at the back and she's smiling. I liked that song a lot.

I see now that the video that I posted, is no longer available (Stephen Pompougnac) amazing, just one day and now the vid is gone.

Oh well, anyway, I am American. Also, I asked my son, if he knew of any French artists shown on American tv, he said he's not sure if they show this guy on tv here, but his name is Matt Poroka, and he has been compared to timberlake (although I am not a timberlake fan) - if you can get this video to play, you can watch him on this link:.

SenseOfDoubt

I'm very much in a French (and Brasilian) mood these days and I'd like to share one of my faves with you.
A true classic by Mr. Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot.

http://www.youtube.com/wa...hqvuP_osfE

Please, give it a try. This song is from 1968. It's on the album "Initials B.B." by Gainsbourg, that is (with Histoire de Melody Nelson) my favourite Gainsbourg.

Unfortunately I did not find Harley Davidson by Bardot (written by Gainsbourg) now on youtube. It used to be on there. Anyway, the best disc regarding 60s french music I heart til now is from the Atomic Cafe series. There are 3 vols out, I only do know vol 1.
