Foley-Miles-Music-Movies THE SCENARIO:
Thursday, June 5th turned out to be an out of the ordinary day. Before I get into the specifics, there's a set of circumstances that had to occur before my inclusion in some of this could have happened. With the Org being incapacitated, I decided to send paligap an email for no other reason than to just give him a "Ghostly booooo." What I got back from him started an unexpected set of dominoes to start falling. As part of his reply he told me that Foley would be "playin' in the area". FOLEY & MILES: For those that don't know, Foley was one of the chosen ones (by the legend himself) to be a part of the Miles Davis legacy from 1987 until his exit from this plane of existence on September 28, 1991 (great Foley song btw). ...A few of the Miles Davis albums he can be heard on. Foley as Foley: If you ain't got it... ...Get it. Another quality I appreciate is along with technical ability... ...is his musical sense of humor. Very important. The vid is lo-res but you get the point. Other musical credits include Lenny White, Mint Condition, Arrested Development, Vanessa Williams as well as FOH mixer for several Jam of the Year tour shows. For open-eared Led Zep fans there's a very perceptive arrangement of Kashmir... ...on Lenny White's EDGE album. MUSIC: Come to find out what "playin' in the area" meant was that Foley would be sharing drum duties with George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic at Crash Mansion in downtown L.A. So after an email followed by a phone call, he arranged for me to come down and check out the show. Foley actually played the main section of the set that featured George Clinton. Now who has "Fish" (a notable drummer himself - Fishbone, Wicked Wisdom, etc) agree to show up as a drum tech? That's what friends are for folks. Lightnin' Bug... ...in full effect. (A name George Clinton gave him during a trip to Psilocybin-Ville ) I'd read that he played drums but I didn't know he could bang like that so after that performance, I hereby dub him Son of Slam. Be aware that George Clinton's got a "Doo-Wop" CD in the works featuring folks like Foley, Sly Stone, El Debarge, Santana, and Gospel diva Kim Burrell. One track, Ain't That Peculiar, features Foley (drums), Sly (keys?) and El on lead vocals. I was privileged to hear a Kim Burrell track where Foley rides her vocal note-for-note and nuance-for-naunce on Lead Bass. You've really gotta hear it to believe it. MOVIES: Many of you may have heard rumors of a Miles Davis movie being done... ...with Don Cheadle playing the music icon. I can tell you that not only is it not a rumor but Don Cheadle will also be directing the feature which includes a role especially written for Foley. How do I know all this? Well Mr. Foley had a bit of a surprise for me. Once we met at the venue and shared some initial conversation, he hit me with the fact that Hollywood's go-to bio writer Chris Wilkinson (tapped as writer on the Miles flick and prior credits include Ali & Nixon) would be coming down to shoot interviews with George Clinton & Foley as part of a pre-flick documentary. And, "Hey, you're gonna shoot some B-roll footage for me." Great. Here I was just expecting a cool hang and some groovy sounds and now i'm being put in a position to screw up somebody's documentary. Well the hang was definitely cool... ...And it's also nice to see When 2 R In Love (Foley & adult film star ROXY REYNOLDS <-LINK-NSFW) From what i've been told, the B-roll footage (a few stills seen above) was acceptable... Prior to the show hanging out on Crash Mountain's back porch with... ...*Kerry David & Mercy (Foley's magnificent personal assistant) *Independent producer (Agent Cody Banks, Round Up: Deposing "The Usual Suspects", etc.) - Interview, IMDB Lord have... ...MERCY! <-LINK (NSFW) Definitely a night filled with fun and surprises and made exceptionally special when you realize you've got a new friend. Be sure and pay a periodic visit to Foley's SmartAlecMusic website: http://www.smartalecmusic.com/ Btw, paligap (now known as "The Facilitator" ) was a major contributor when Foley decided to flip-the-script on his Inner-Views concept. http://www.smartalecmusic...Ypart3.htm tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 [Edited 8/24/11 20:30pm] "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Wow...what an awesome experience for you.....sounds like a good connection. Hurray for pali! I did finally get to meet Kendra that night. The Professor and I were scheduled to have a meeting with her while I was in Tallahassee. She couldn't get by until after i'd left. But there's a project in the future. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all." | |
