MJ as a performer in years to come...

Thing is, I don't understand why people always t criticise the dude for lip-syncing during TV performances/Dangerous/History tours...

Heck, at that time he was at the peak of his career as a performer. He was blood Michael Jackson - who gave a fuck if he lip-synced? No-one! People flocked just to SEE the dude, even if lip-synced, the performances were a complete spectacle and the atmosphere completely electric. He turned himself from being "just" a "singer" to being a "performer." He could've stood on stage for three minutes and farted and people still would've gone wild.

BUT, those days are long gone... and he can't get away with that anymore. He's gotta prove himself all over again. And that's where I have my doubts. As a live performer he doesn't have the versatility of Prince or the Stones or George Michael and I can't see how he's gonna work those performances as a near 50-year-old. That's assuming this so-called "album" ever sees the light of day and he ever performs again...

Anyway, thoughts?

I've said this many times before and I will say it again: the smartest thing for Michael to do would be an Unplugged televised concert and CD.Strip the music down and get back to basics!! I know his voice might not be what it used to be but I'm sure he could pull this off. This would be so much better than yet another overly hyped and over-produced CD featuring songs produced by the likes of Ne-Yo and Akon barf Leave shit hop alone and stick with REAL SONGS! Imagine hearing acoustic versions of songs like "Human Nature" and "I Can't Help It".

Um, he actually DID do something similar on the Dangerous concert. Stood there for 3 minutes doing nothing while people went absolutely mental. Then he pulled off his glasses and stood for a while longer until people were like wetting themselves and fainting, THEN the music kicked in. lol

I agree he has to prove himself- not to fans, but definitely to the general public. Although the fans would love just as much to see real live performances from him.

The guy has lip synced since he was in his early 20's.

Motown 25 was 100% lip sycned. How is that amazing lip syncing directly from the album and performing a dance move that wason tv and around for a solid decade?

Grammys 1988 was lip sycned until the end and the last few seconds that were live sounded awful.

Just face it he was been exposed as a studio musican who cant do what he does in the studio with 50 takes per verse.. sure a performance here or there in concert was pretty good. But he couldnt do in constantly! Now add the older he got with 5+ nose jobs, that must have changed the pitch of his voice? Who knows, but clearly something was up, if you had the talent you pretended to have you wouldnt need to do half the stuff you did with Jacko Stunts publicity and lip syncing all their your 20's & 30's. Lets be honest the guy was the biggest star ever at 25 and by 35 his career was basically over. Allot of smoke and mirrors if you ask me. The difference from then and now is he had Epic helping hide his "flaws" and pushing him with $10 million videos and projects so you were blinded by so much money pushing him and you didnt notice the "truth". Now we see what they were hiding all those years!

Funniest thing i've read in a while. Michael didn't lip synch on the Destiny, Triumph, Victory or Bad tours. Stop acting like he's some studio creation. That's clearly not the case and it's obvious you don't know too much about MJ. Seriously, where on earth are you getting these bogus "facts' from?

In what sense? Thriller 25 is one of the biggest selling albums this year! And as long as Michael doesn't say, that he won't release any new music anymore, his career is just on hiatus!

In the sense that he doesn't perform anymore and doesn't release new materials...

And please, watch the 30th anniversary concert... The guy lost it... But he lost it a long time ago...

I love Prince and all, but MOST of the world could argue he's over too. He hasn't put out anything great within this decade. And I know that if Michael ever does decide to release a new album, it will sell more than The Rainbow Children, Musicology, 3121 and Planet Earth combined. And he'll have 100X more hype than all of Prince's albums since 1996. As much as I lost my interest in Michael Jackson's music, because the lack of it, I'm not blind to the fact that this album will be huge, and everyone will be talking about it in a way Prince wishes he could get. Michael Jackson has only ever put 1 mediocre album, Invincible, which is a solid album. If he learned from his mistake, and doesn't get his new album over-produced, he will put out a great album. I don't think he's done as long as long as he still has his name.

That's your opinion... and there are plenty of peeps who think differently... besides, a one-off gig, the first really in 4 years, doesn't determine on whether someone has lost something or not!

My only thoughts are...It DOES matter if he lip syncs. Do you think we'd be Prince fans if he lip synced? Unless you are doing acrobatics or Rollerskating and doing back flips, yu best be singing.

I have my doubts with MJ performing...Well Singing and Dancing. IMO he hasn't kept up with it and unless he's practcing often, at 50, I really have my doubts he has the chops anymore. I think his voice my be still ok but I doubt he can move like he did.

That's not my opinion, that's a fact...

Even MJ knows it... That's why he refuses to perform, the guy could make millions touring all across the world with his brothers...

rolleyes Good Grief. That's like saying Elvis' Career is still alive! I'm sorry a re-issue of an album from 25 years ago doesn't equate to a career still being alive. I actually don't think he HAS a career except for simply being MJ now.

Would you say Sade´s career is over?

And if it is over, it is because he decided so, not because his work was not succesful or popular anymore.

Don't agree with you on some of this. Bad TOur was 100% live and was brilliant. Also, the live vocals on the 1988 grammy performance were on the ball...

Anyway, Motown 25 and Grammys '88 were both lip-synced, along with MTV 1995, but that's precisely my point - he was lip-syncing but the performances were still captivating, mesmerizing, and made everyone go crazy. He just had that power back then, EVEN as late as 1995. But I'm not sure he can pull that off, anymore. The sunglasses at the beginning of the Dangerous concerts - NO WAY that'd garner that sort of a reaction today. So where does he go? Strip down the performances and just sing or what? I'm drawing a blank on this one, hence why I threw it out there for discussion.

Never been a MJ fan, but i hope he can get his life back together.

They man semms like a he doesnt have a mean bone in his body.

Whether he abused kids, we'll never really know, but definately inappropriate behavior, and ultimately that is whats going to taint all his performances for the rest of his life, whether he can still sing and dance or not.

It's almost time for these guys to start thinking about retirement, more than anything else.

Watch the Japan MTV Awards, watch the 2006 World Music Awards... the excitement is still there! And that would only increase if there would be a new album and concerts! He still is Michael Jackson!

Dance

He's over.

He came, he poplocked, he sold soda, and he bitched Paul n them. His contribution ended as soon as he discovered bleaching. At this point he as an artist has nothing left to offer. More important, he has no desire to stretch beyond what he's done or even maintain what he's done. I don't want to compare him to JB, but JB was doing splits at like 100 years old. Even when JB was hooked on the stuff, you could still find him somewhere with his wig straight, and his feet moving. The only reason he's not somewhere yelling right now is he got with some double wide trash that put poison in his 'gnac.

Well for someone who is so over, you all sure talk about him a hell of a lot on this site.

Face it, Michael Jackson will never really be over. Obviously he will never get back to where he was career/success wise, but people will always be interested in him in some way and any new music he puts out will generate interest.

Motown 25 wasnt lip synced 100%. He sang i want you back, the love you save, never can say goodbye and ill be there live. But i suppose people only remember the lip synced billie jean more which paved way for the acceptance of MJ lip synced songs so as long as the performance was good.

On a live/sync ratio MJ was constantly singing live up until the history era. Fair enough its been downhill after this but its good that he has now stepped down to reassess hs music career.

Regarding 'MJ as a performer in years to come...' as 80's fan I've seen many attempted comebacks in recent years that have had decent financial returns but with mixed reviews from actors like stallone (rambo 4, rocky 6), arnie (terminator 3), willis (die hard 4), harrison ford (indiana jones 4) and franchises such as star wars, predator/alien, superman returns, batman begins, dukes of hazzard, knight rider and musicians such as prince, the police, duran duran etc. But it will always be more difficult for Michael Jackson because of the standards he set so it's delicatly poised as good will not be good enough. neutral

The matter of fact it wasn't few seconds but well over 2 minutes, and the last part was so far the best part...

But speaking of awful singing at the grammys, go watch the Baby I'm a star performance by Prince, Prince's vocals are completly off... He sounds awful... lol

Oh please, it's not like if Prince never lipsynced ... Prince lipsynced a lot in 90's, remember the Brit awards, Fashion award, Monte Carlo award, American Music Awards etc...
If he had the talent, why does Prince lipsync in his performances ? Smoke and mirrors ?

Oh please, it's not like if Prince never lipsynced ... Prince lipsynced a lot in 90's, remember the Brit awards, Fashion award, Monte Carlo award, American Music Awards etc...
If he had the talent, why does Prince lipsync in his performances ? Smoke and mirrors ?

motownlover

there is intrest in mike , he still has fans , and im sure he can stil sing
but he canot dance and sing at the same time.
ever since thriller he cant seem to please any music critic.
i dont think it matters with whom he hooks up with , because its never going to be good enough. and all of this because of standarts he set in the past and those standards are standards mj seems to be chasing for.
its not only the general music fans and critics who want to have something as great as thriller. he wants it just as badly, and thats only slowing him down and pushing him towards people he shouldnt hook up with in the first place.
i seriously hope he gives a full atempt wich means studio musicians and live performances - the dancing so he sounds good again.
